Hellenic Culture

At Oakleigh Grammar, our students are given unique opportunities to proudly represent our school in events organised by various Greek organisations. These occasions not only deepen their appreciation of Hellenic culture and Orthodox traditions but also allow them to engage with the wider community, fostering respect, pride, and cultural understanding. Through these experiences, our students become active participants in preserving and celebrating the values that shape our heritage.
On Saturday 9 August, our Year 11 SRC members attended Melbourne’s Lemnos Gallipoli commemorative service. The event was held at the Lemnos Gallipoli Memorial at Lemnos Square in Albert Park and serves as an annual tribute to the significant role of the Greek island of Lemnos in Australia’s ANZAC story.
It honours the Australian nurses and soldiers who served there during the Gallipoli campaign in 1915, the 148 Australian soldiers who remain buried on the island, and the local Lemnian community who supported them. Students were accompanied by Hellenic Culture Coordinator Mrs Natasha Spanos. Representing Oakleigh Grammar, Year 11 SRC members Tijana Karac and Elena Logan laid a wreath on behalf of our school community. As a token of appreciation for their attendance, students were presented with a copy of the book “Lemnos and Gallipoli Revealed” by the President, Mr Lee Tarlamis MP.
On Thursday 15 August, our students also participated in the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos, one of the most significant feast days in the Orthodox Christian tradition, particularly within the Greek Orthodox Church. This sacred day commemorates the “falling asleep” (Dormition) of the Virgin Mary and her assumption into heaven. In Greece, this is a national holiday, marked by vibrant celebrations, particularly in towns and villages with churches dedicated to the Theotokos. Although the school was closed on this day, selected Oakleigh Grammar students joined the Divine Liturgy at the Greek Orthodox Parish of Sts Anargiri in Oakleigh, marking the occasion with prayer and reverence.
We warmly congratulate all participating students for their dedication, respect, and commitment in representing Oakleigh Grammar. Their involvement not only honours our school community but also ensures the continued celebration of our Hellenic heritage and Orthodox faith.
