Humanities

I invite you to read an excerpt from the recent excursion the Year 11 Legal Studies class went on.
On the 28 of August, Year 11 Legal Studies had the opportunity to visit the Supreme Court of Victoria and Parliament House. What made it so enjoyable was not just the places we visited but experiencing it all alongside my classmates. Sharing our thoughts, discussing questions, and reflecting on what we saw as a group made the day more meaningful.
At the Supreme Court, we were able to sit in on two trials, both of a Criminal nature. Watching the cases unfold right in front of me immersed me in the depth and detail of legal proceedings, which I found much more interesting than just reading about them. The absolute highlight of our visit to the Supreme Court was being able to speak with two judges afterwards. Asking them about the cases and hearing how they approach their responsibilities gave us a perspective I do not think we could have gained in any other way.
Parliament House was equally eye-opening. Standing in the chambers where laws are chaotically debated and passed made politics feel much more real and relevant to everyday life. I came away with a greater appreciation of how important these institutions are and an understanding of how they shape society.

I would like to wish the Year 12 Cohort of 2025 the very best for their upcoming examinations. Remember to take the time to look after yourselves by taking walks and plenty of sleep as you begin your SWOTVAC period.
The Humanities faculty wishes you all the very best.
Mr Patrick O'Connell
