Arts and Engagement

Wow, what a week it was!
Here at SJRC, we celebrate Arts and Engagement Week in the first week of Term 4—and what a vibrant celebration it was this year!
The week began with the return of the SJRC Photographic Competition, once again in full swing. Students from all year levels participated, using digital cameras and prompts provided by Mr Boswell. During lunchtimes, they explored the campus, capturing creative shots inspired by these prompts. Congratulations to our overall winners, Daria P (Year 8) and Gabriel H (Year 8)! Honourable mentions go to Ayuri M (Year 11), Sean S (Year 8), and Jayden H (Year 12) for their impressive entries.
Throughout the week, the Year 9 Arts Class brought excitement to the campus by hiding mini artworks around the school. Students were invited to find and collect them in exchange for a sweet prize. It was fantastic to see students enthusiastically hunting for these hidden treasures each day as new pieces appeared across the grounds!
On Tuesday, we welcomed art conservator Cash Brown, who spoke to students about the restoration of a significant artwork by Br Amedy Molloy, The Nativity (1961). This restoration marks an important step in preserving the legacy of our first principal and ensuring the continued care of our College’s art collection.
Wednesday was dedicated to exploring careers in the arts, featuring a giant Find-a-Word challenge based on creative pathways and professions. That evening, the College came alive with our Annual Performing Arts Evening, beginning with a delicious Italian feast for performers and families, prepared by the talented Hospitality students under the guidance of Chef Kees and Mrs Haider. The performances that followed in the Lecture Theatre showcased the incredible talent within our community, including solo acts, the College Band, Rock ‘n’ Roll dancers, and the College Choir. A heartfelt thank you goes to Ms Espinoza, Mr Diab, Mr Thomas, and Mr Goicoa for their leadership and support throughout the night.
On Thursday, Mr Bailey led students through an expressive drawing workshop using unconventional techniques. Students attached drawing tools to long sticks with wire ends, using full-body movements to create a large, collaborative artwork. The piece evolved dynamically as students circled around, layering marks and tones—an engaging and memorable creative experience!
Finally, Friday brought one of the week’s highlights: Karaoke! Led by Mr Diab, students filled the space with laughter and music, singing their hearts out while cheering each other on. The sense of support and community was wonderful to witness.
A huge thank you to all students and staff who participated in any part of the week. Your enthusiasm, creativity, and willingness to get involved made Arts and Engagement Week 2025 such a success.
