Cultural Visit - Mr Ahoy & Mr Clayton-Dixon

First Nations Visit

At the end of term 3 we were very lucky to have two First Nations people visit us - Darrell and Callum. They had a collection of tools that we were able to hold. There were tools used for grinding seeds to make flour, hunting tools such as boomerangs and spears and weapons used in local tribal wars. Darrell and Callum explained how each tool was made. Callum continues practicing the traditional First Nations skills as he makes coolamons, carefully cutting the bark from trees to create the vessel. We also sang songs, accompanying the music by playing clap sticks and stories were told. Thank you to Mrs Makeham for asking Darrell and Callum to visit our school.

Authors Visit

Susea Spray - Author Visit

Early this term, we travelled out to Yarrowitch to meet Susea Spray. Susea is an award winning author who shared her books with us and most importantly, what inspires her to write - her travelling adventures. Susea is a sailor who travels the world in her boat. She shared her latest sailing adventure, sailing from Adelaide to France. Her stories were so engaging we were all waiting to hear what would happen next. Would they be taken hostage by pirates in the Caribbean? No, they were safe, however the fog set in for the final leg of their trip making for a very long voyage. Following the reading of Susea's book, 'A Big Blue Boat', we completed some craft activities. We all had a great time learning about sailing, writing and catching up with our friends at Yarrowitch. Susea's books are available to borrow from our school library.

Green Thumbs

Our enthusiastic gardeners have been busy in the garden, completing jobs from turning compost to sowing seeds and seedlings. We get very excited spotting worms when we turn our compost, watching it turn into soil to be added to the vegetable gardens. He have harvested a lettuce and our broad beans are starting to be ready to be picked. I don't think any will make it home as we are too excited to open the pods and eat the beans. We have planted a tomato seedling, capsicums, cucumbers, zucchinis and bean seeds. The peas have sprouted! We hope you enjoyed the mushrooms that were sent home. The Green Thumbs would like to say a massive thank you to Pete and Eileen for donating the seedlings for us to grow and to Mr Wall for making pegs to hold down the netting over the gardens.
