Jamila Rizvi – Awoken by a Broken Brain

Guest:

Jamila Rizvi

Jamila Rizvi has not been the perfect sick person.

When Jamila was last in our studio, she was deep in the grief stage.

Jamila’s life had been irrevocably changed by the imposition of a brain tumour, and the myriad of health complications due to surgery. To put it simply, Jamila didn’t know who Jamila was anymore, and that terrified her.

This week, in the Vulnerabilitea House, Jamila answers the questions “what aspects of your identity have you held onto for too long?”

The drip-fed loss of cognitive functions and a new hormone condition which made her constantly starving, Jamila felt like her body and mind were no longer her own. Speaking to Hugh, Josh, and Ryan really honestly, Jamila opens up about her eating disorder during this time; how it impacted her sense of self, her relationships, and ability to connect.

Jamila, it was a joy to have you back. We’re so proud of you.

PBIS Blitz – Looking After Yourself

As we get closer to Christmas, things get busy and we can start to feel tired. This is the perfect time to remember how important it is to look after ourselves so everyone can stay safe and enjoy the end of the year.

What does looking after yourself look like?

  • Taking a break when you feel overwhelmed
  • Using calm breathing or quiet time when you need it
  • Drinking water and eating well
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Asking for help when something feels too big
  • Using kind words and making safe choices
  • Knowing when to step away from a tricky situation

Why is this important?  When we take care of our bodies and our emotions, we can learn better, play safely, and enjoy all the fun activities happening at school. We help ourselves—and each other—have a positive, calm and happy end to the year.

Let’s all remember: Looking after yourself helps everyone!
