French

Prep
This term in French, the Prep students have been looking at farm animals. We have been playing word games to reinforce vocabulary such as memory and charades. Students have been learning vocabulary using TPR (total physical response) for cat (le chat), dog (le chien), cow (la vache), pig (le cochon), horse (le cheval), sheep (le mouton), chicken (la poule) and duck (le canard). We have been reading French books and listening to the sounds the animals make, comparing the way animal sounds are described in English and French.
Grade 1/2
Students have been reinforcing their number knowledge to 20 by playing games such as Bingo and Go Fish. They have also been working on their speaking and listening skills while playing in small groups. We have also begun learning the traditional tale of The Three Billy Goats Gruff. Students have listened to the story in French, and we have discussed the main characters. We will soon begin practicing short plays, working on our pronunciation of French sounds.
Grade 3/4
Students have been planning an imaginary party in French this term. We have written invitations using modelled sentence structures and word banks, and they are now compiling a shopping list for their party. We have been using French supermarket catalogues to find and list items, and they have then written the cost of items in word form. We are learning about numbers from 1-100, and looking at how the structure of French numbers is sifferent to English numbers. For example, the translation of 'seventy' in French is 'sixty-ten' (soisante-dix), and to say ninety-three in French you would say 'four-twenties-thirteen' (quatre-vignt-treize). It is a unique and interesting way of saying numbers!!
Grade 5/6
In French this term, we have been looking at different sports. Students expressed a desire to talk more about sport in French and so we are completing a unit looking at different grammatical structures and verb conjugation through this topic. Students have investigated popular sports in different countries and written sentences in French using a range of common verbs. We have also begun inquiring into the Tour de France, looking at where the race takes place throughout France.
Thank you to all Moriac students for a wonderful beginning to Term 4!
