Year 5/6

Camp Howqua 2025
We are so proud of our students who attended 5/6 Camp Howqua last week. They faced their fears on the adventure activities, supported one another and had an amazing few days. Well done to all who attended. Please see Compass for a link to the photo gallery for the camp.
English
In English this term we are reading the class novel 'The Last Bear'. Students are engaging in themes of sustainability and animal rights as well as environmental concerns. We have been exploring key vocabulary and unpacking author purpose and inference by analysing segments of the texts in close reads. Students are also using the mentor text to draft and publish a persuasive letter around conservation of polar bears. This term we are focussing on fundamental language conventions and prefixes and suffixes in spelling.
Maths
In Maths this term we started with Patterns and Algebra. Students were solving problems that involved applying a rule to continue or create patterns. They also solved problems that included all 4 operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and utilising brackets where needed. Students are now starting a unit on Angles, where they are learning to draw and measure all angle types using a protractor.
Humanities
We’ve now wrapped up our Health and Puberty unit, and students showed great maturity and curiosity throughout those discussions. This week, we’re beginning our new topic on Australian Government. Students will explore the three levels of government — federal, state, and local — and learn about the roles and responsibilities of each. This will help them understand how decisions are made and how government impacts our daily lives.
