Learning in Action
📖 Literacy
Students have begun reading the novel Hatchet, where they have been introduced to the main character 13 year old Brian Robeson, who became stranded in the Canadian wilderness after a plane crash. They have discussed survival techniques and made predictions about what will happen in the following chapters. The novel uses descriptive language about Brian’s location, and students have used their visualisations to illustrate what the Canadian Wilderness may look like, including animals and landscape.
During writing, students have been using apostrophes of possession for both singular and plural nouns to create sentences. They have learnt the difference between direct and indirect speech, and can identify examples of each across a variety of texts.
Daily Word Work continues to enhance students' spelling and vocabulary. We currently have the focus of homophones.
Preview: Classes will continue to read Hatchet and explore the themes of survival, resilience, making predictions and summarising.
➗ Maths
In Numeracy, the focus has been on fractions. Students have learnt the parts of a fraction, equivalent fractions, and what an improper fraction is. They have used number lines and bar models to order fractions, and even created their own fraction model using a paper strip. They have identified equivalent fractions using different strategies, such as doubling and halving.
Students have used scales to compare and order mass (grams and kilograms) and really enjoyed weighing different items from around the room, estimating how much the items weigh, and then using the scales to record the actual weight.
Preview: Grade 4’s will learn different strategies of how to convert improper fractions to mixed numerals using illustrations, division and multiplication. They will explore millimetres and litres in capacity and estimate and measure liquids and record their findings.
🧠 Knowledge-Rich Units
Preview for what is coming: Students will dive into the fascinating world of the Vikings. They will explore world geography to understand where the Vikings travelled and settled, before learning about Viking runes (letters), daily life, and what it meant “to go a-Viking.” Students will study the Vikings as sailors, traders, and raiders, investigate Viking ships, including the famous longship, and learn about influential figures such as Eric the Red and Leif Eriksson and their voyages west. They will also become storytellers themselves as they explore Viking gods, myths, and how Viking culture still influences us today, including the days of the week.
