To start the term, our Grade 2 students explored The Stone Lion by Margaret Wild as part of our literature unit. Through shared reading and discussion, students learned about themes of compassion, kindness, and courage while reflecting on what it means to be selfless. They practised retelling the story using story maps, identified problems and solutions in narratives, and examined how characters and illustrations change from beginning to end. We also linked our learning to real-world examples by reading about famous lion statues and their meanings across cultures. Students enjoyed engaging in hands-on activities such as role-playing scenes and creating their own mini statues, bringing the storyâs messages of hope and friendship to life. We also used the story to engage in sentence-level writing, developing our understanding of personal pronouns and possessive adjectives.
This week our students literature Unit on âThe Snail and the Whaleâ by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. We looked at the themes of friendship, and started text-level writing, using the mentor text to help us structure and plan our own narratives! Students focused on using expanded sentences, adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns, to help keep their readers entertained.

Preview - Next week, we will use this narrative and a poem of a similar theme to help us write some poetry.
Word Work
â Maths
This term, we began learning about fractions. Students have explored wholes, halves, quarters, and eighths through a variety of engaging activities. In Week 1, they investigated fractions of shapes and collections, and also identified equivalent fractions. This week, our focus has shifted to finding fractions in real-life contexts such as mass, capacity, and time. To support their understanding, students have used hands-on materials including cut-out shapes, counters, and MAB blocks.

Our next topic, the Grade 2s, will be revisiting place value and looking at 3 and 4 digit numbers.Â
đWellbeing
In Week 1, the students explored the quote, âFriends are the flowers in the garden of lifeâ, and discussed how our friendships and friends are all different, but all add beauty, colour, and joy to our lives, just like flowers do. Â
Â
We then began our RRRRâs unit on âPositive Gender Relationsâ. Our first session explored the question, âWhat is fair play?â, where the students engaged in a variety of games in small groups. The games were:
- Human Knot
- Charades
- Go Fish
- I Spy
- Snakes and Ladders
- Snap
At the end of the lesson, we had a discussion about:
- How do the rules help us enjoy the game?
- How did they work as a team?
- What sort of actions can lead to fights?
- Should boys and girls be equally expected to play by the rules?
The next lesson focused on creating a gender-friendly classroom. The students played the 'harmony' game, where the aim is for our class to follow the actions of the leader so that the group looks like it is moving as one. Once again, we discussed:
What skills do we need to work in harmony or to move all as one?
Can girls and boys be leaders?
How do we know when it is good to follow a leader and when it is not?
What can we do if a friend is starting to lead an activity and we think that it is a mean, hurtful, or unfair activity?
What can we do if a person is leading others in mean gender labelling by saying things like âboys canât play thisâ or âgirls canât play this gameâ?
Â
We then discussed how we can apply these understandings and actions to create a gender friendly classroom, where everyone feels accepted and included. The students used these examples to draw and label a picture of how we can create our gender friendly classroom.Â

Throughout the next fortnight, the Grade 2s will continue our RRRR unit on âPositive Gender Relationsâ by exploring gender-based violence and respect.
