Fantastic 3/4

Term 4 Week 4
3/4 Newsletter
Welcome to Week 4 of Term 4!
We’ve had a wonderfully busy few weeks with Grandparents Day and the Colour Fun Run! The students loved welcoming their grandparents and special visitors into the classroom and proudly sharing their Leadership Binders. It was heartwarming to see the genuine conversations as they asked thoughtful questions about their grandparents’ childhoods. The students also created fantastic PowerPoint presentations to celebrate their grandparents or special people, a beautiful way to honour the important connections in their lives.
Literacy:
This week, we have continued reading The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and are now approaching the end of the story. The students have loved following Dorothy, Toto, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Lion on their journey to the Emerald City and beyond. Together, we have explored the many challenges they faced, from meeting the Wicked Witch of the West to discovering the true meaning of courage, love, and wisdom. The students have been captivated by the story’s twists and turns, and in the coming weeks, they will begin creating their own fantastic quest narratives filled with adventure, friendship, and determination.
Phonics:
In phonics, students have continued working on the 111 rule. The 111 Rule helps them know when to double the final consonant in a word before adding a vowel suffix such as -ing, -ed, -er, or -est. The rule applies when three conditions are met: the word has one syllable, one short vowel sound, and ends with one consonant. Learning this rule helps students spell words correctly and understand how adding suffixes can change the meaning of a base word. We have also been exploring homophones such as grown/groan and bawl/ball, learning how words that sound the same can have very different meanings and spellings.

Maths:
In Maths, our Year 3 students have been exploring chance and probability. They’ve enjoyed discussing everyday events and deciding whether they are likely, unlikely, or impossible to happen. Through games and real-life examples, students have been learning to compare and order events based on how likely they are to occur. Our Year 4 students have been focusing on three-dimensional shapes, recognising and describing their features such as faces, edges, and vertices. They’ve had fun learning to draw 3D shapes and investigating how these shapes appear from different viewpoints. This learning supports their spatial awareness and helps them make connections between geometry and the world around them.
Science
This term in Science, students are exploring the roles and relationships of living things within different habitats. They are learning about producers, consumers, and decomposers, and how each plays an important part in maintaining balance within an ecosystem. Students will observe living things in the local environment and classify them based on their roles, as well as research different types of decomposers and their importance. They will represent feeding relationships using food chains and compare how these differ across various habitats.
