In Our Classrooms

Year 2 Camping Incursion

Our recent Year 2 camp incursion was a wonderful success, with students enthusiastically embracing every part of the immersive indoor and outdoor learning adventure. Guided by Supreme Incursions, the children worked collaboratively in small teams to design and build shelters strong enough to withstand the simulated “Hurricane Supreme,” eagerly testing and refining their creations with impressive problem-solving and STEAM thinking.

Their excitement continued as they rotated through cooking and woodwork treasure box making, each activity sparking curiosity, creativity and genuine teamwork. The high level of engagement from all students made the day a memorable and meaningful learning experience, showcasing the incredible benefits of experiential learning here at Hazel Glen College.

Year 6 Shark Tank

Our Year Six students wowed us this week with their Shark Tank presentations as part of their Curiosity unit. Acting as young innovators, they pitched creative inventions such as the perfect teacher lanyard, puppy perfume, portable coffee machines, chore robots and other clever solutions to everyday problems. Students took full ownership of the process, developing scripts, designing slides, building prototypes, and rehearsing persuasive pitches.

They also negotiated equity, making thoughtful decisions about investment, ownership, and fair partnership as they refined their business ideas. We are incredibly proud of the confidence and creativity shown by every student. Their teamwork, communication, and willingness to take risks highlight the strong learning culture they’ve built throughout the year.

Prep to Year 3 Athletics Carnival

Last week, Hazel Glen College was alive with colour, energy, and community spirit as our Prep to Year 3 students took to the field for their annual Athletics Carnival. From the moment the first events began, it was clear that this year’s carnival would be something special.

Students arrived bursting with excitement, proudly dressed in their vibrant house colours. The track and field quickly transformed into a sea of red, blue, green, pink, orange and yellow as our young athletes cheered one another on. It was wonderful to see so many students demonstrating our College values, giving their best effort, encouraging their peers, showing resilience, and celebrating each other’s achievements.

Participation was outstanding across all year levels. Whether it was leaping over hurdles, throwing a vortex, or taking part in novelty events, every student contributed to the spirit of the day. Laughter, determination, and big smiles could be spotted everywhere.

We were also thrilled by the fantastic turnout from families. Parents, carers, grandparents, and siblings filled the sidelines, creating a warm and supportive atmosphere. Their encouragement helped make the day even more memorable for our young competitors.

Throughout the carnival, house points were counted and tallied as students earned points for effort, teamwork, and sportsmanship. While we know everyone is eager to find out the results, the winning house will be officially announced at our next school assembly, so stay tuned!

A huge thank-you to all staff, Student Leadership Academy assistants, and families for helping make this event such a success. Most of all, congratulations to our amazing Prep–Year 3 students for showing what Hazel Glen spirit is all about!

Every Day Counts at Hazel Glen College

We’re Here to Help!

At Hazel Glen College, we are here to help. If your child is finding it difficult to attend school regularly, please don’t hesitate to reach out to their classroom teacher. We understand that every family’s situation is unique, and sometimes there are challenges that can make regular attendance a challenge.

Our team is here to listen, support and work alongside you, your child and family to find practical solutions. Whether it’s developing a positive morning routine, addressing worries about school or making adjustments to help your child feel more comfortable and confident, we’re here to help.

Together, we can build positive attendance habits that set students up for success, both in their learning and overall wellbeing. Remember, small steps make a big difference. One College, Everyone Matters

At Hazel Glen College, we place a strong emphasis on the importance of attending school every day.

Why Attendance Matters

Every day at our College plays a vital role in your child’s growth and success. Regular attendance helps your child to:

  • Build strong foundations by developing essential skills and knowledge across all learning areas
  • Grow socially and emotionally through friendships and daily interactions that boost confidence and a sense of belonging
  • Stay on track with their learning, reducing the risk of falling behind and feeling overwhelmed

Understanding Attendance Categories

To help families monitor attendance, we use the following categories:

  • Repeated Absences: 5–10 days absent per term
  • Ongoing At-Risk Absence: 11–15 days absent per term
  • Chronic Absence: 16–25 days absent per term

We understand there are times when absences are unavoidable, such as due to illness. However, regular attendance and punctuality are key to your child’s academic progress, social development, and overall wellbeing.

Supporting Your Child’s Attendance

Setting up positive routines and addressing attendance concerns early can help your child feel more engaged and connected at school. Here are some practical ways you can support regular attendance:

  • Talk to your child about school. Ask how they feel about school life, what they enjoy and whether anything is worrying them
  • Watch for common issues, such as:
    • Bullying or cyberbullying
    • Feeling isolated or disconnected
    • Struggles with schoolwork or feeling overwhelmed
    • Lack of engagement with subjects
    • Difficulties with friendships or teacher relationships
    • Competing commitments or lack of motivation
    • Feeling misunderstood or culturally excluded
  • Celebrate attendance milestones. Acknowledge and encourage consistency and punctuality
  • Model commitment by showing how you follow through with your own responsibilities
  • Encourage involvement in school activities, such as sports, clubs, or other interests. These can help build friendships and a stronger sense of belonging
  • Establish consistent routines, including:
    • Getting a good night’s sleep
    • Finishing homework
    • Packing school bags the night before
    • Having breakfast and getting ready on time
    • Organising travel arrangements, such as walking with a friend

Let’s Work Together

Remember every day counts. If you have concerns about your child’s attendance, please reach out to their classroom teacher to discuss a plan moving forward. Together, we can work towards a positive, consistent school experience for your child.
