Teaching and Learning

Rosina Gemmill, Deputy Principal Learning and Teaching

Buongiorno a tutti e Benvenuti a Term 2

Our students have settled in well as we re-establish our classroom routines and reconnect with our peers and educators.

In accordance with system guidelines, and the Victorian Curriculum we have restructured our timetable. The 9:00 -11:00am block in the morning is dedicated to English and the 11:30 – 12:30 block dedicated to Math. Specialist classes begin at 12:30pm.

Our SAKG times have changed with all SAKG classes running for one hour – cooking included. Thanks to Mrs Conroy for making this adjustment so that our students can still undertake this valuable learning.

Ciao for now!

Rosina Gemmill

Foundation

What a fun start to term 2 the Foundation class has had! We have been learning about obstacle courses describing what to do and using the correct terminology – first, next and last. We got to go out and have a turn at completing an obstacle course on the Junior oval. We even created a dark tunnel just like Hugo went through in our story. During maths we have been looking at location describing object

placements using the words – next to, behind, in front. We were very excited to learn about our left and right hands. We can now tell our left hand because it makes the ‘L’ shape with our thumb and pointer finger.

Year 1

The Grade One students have adjusted to the new classroom structure, with them all working well together during their school days.  They have been enjoying the Storybook feature of the InitiaLit programme, with the latest book being Let's Get a Pup by Bob Graham.  Along with drawing their favourite dogs, the students made a graph of their favourite pets.

Year 2

The grade 2 students have made a great start to term 2! They have adjusted very well to our new class structure and timetable. They are enjoying listening to and responding to different stories as part of our English sessions. This week we have read The Stone Lion, next week we will be writing our own stories about a statue coming to life.

Please remember that students' fruit needs to be ready to eat and mess free so that it can be easily eaten while students are working.

Year 3/4

The students have been learning about various aspects of fractions. In pairs, students had to identify, draw and write proper fractions with a deck of cards. They had to investigate and work out which fraction was greater than, and less than.

Year 5/6

Literacy

The 5/6's have started the term with our new novel Us Mob Walawurru. As this text is based in 1960s Australia, students will respond with a Factual Recount of the 1967 Referendum. They have already learned so much about the different challenges the First Nations Peoples had to face in Australia, and there is so much more for them to look into!

Numeracy

The 5/6's have started the Term with Fractions, first looking at fraction walls, and slowly progressing to conversion of improper fractions to mixed numerals. It is evident that they are grasping concepts well in their workbooks. Students have now begun the next unit: 3D Objects!

The 5/6's also began training for winter sport which will kick off next Friday May 8th versus Numurkah Primary School (Home Game for us). The footy and netball players are looking forward to an exciting season with hopefully lots of fun and lots of wins!

Thank you to Millie and Taylah for representing the school at the Nathalia ANZAC Dawn Service.
