Exploring space rocks with Dr. Rachel Kirby
Our students enjoyed an inspirational learning opportunity during last week's lunchtime STEM Snippets session. In just 20 minutes, they gained fascinating insights into the world of meteorites thanks to a special visit from Dr. Rachel Kirby of the Monash University School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment.
Dr. Kirby shared highlights from her research and fieldwork, which often take her to remote, arid regions of Australia and even to Antarctica in search of meteorites. Students were especially intrigued by the idea that these ancient space rocks act as “time capsules,” offering scientists clues about the origins and evolution of our solar system.
Through her presentation, Dr. Kirby explained how researchers use a multidisciplinary approach, drawing on physics, chemistry, and biology, to analyse meteorites and uncover the stories they hold.
This engaging session sparked curiosity and excitement among our students, opening a window into the fields of planetary science and space exploration.

Political cartoons: visuals, text, symbolism, and perspectives
As part of their Humanities studies, our Year 10 students participated in an engaging workshop led by staff from the Museum of Australian Democracy (MOAD). The session introduced students to the rich and thought‑provoking world of political cartoons.
Throughout the workshop, students examined the key elements that make political cartoons such powerful tools for commentary, including visuals, text, symbolism, contemporary issues, and differing perspectives. They explored how these components work together to communicate meaning and spark discussion.
Students also had the opportunity to view a range of political cartoons, share their interpretations, and even try to create their own pieces. This hands‑on experience encouraged them to think critically about political issues and express their own viewpoints creatively.
We extend our sincere thanks to the MOAD team for providing such a valuable learning experience. Their expertise helped deepen our students’ understanding of political communication and inspired them to engage thoughtfully with the world around them.
