FIRE Carrier Commissioning Service

On Wednesday 26th March our FIRE carrier students gathered alongside our sister primary schools and John Paul College for a truly special occasion, the commissioning of our 14 new FIRE carrier students.

We were deeply honoured to be joined by Bunurong elders and emerging leaders who led us in a beautiful Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony. We also welcomed Lisa Moloney, the FIRE Carrier Co-ordinator from the Opening Doors Foundation, to share in this sacred moment.

FIRE stands for Friends Igniting Reconciliation through Education. Stepping into this role requires strength, courage, and a deep commitment to sharing the stories, history, and culture of our First Nations People.

The morning was filled with powerful symbolism and shared commitments:

The Spirit of the Fire: In a moving ritual, our new student leaders and staff warmed their hands over the flames of the Bunurong Elders' fire. They were commissioned with the Spirit of the Fire on their lips to speak the truth, their eyes to see the good in all people, their ears for deep listening, and their hearts to become bearers of peace, hope, and harmony.

A Shared Covenant: Representatives from each school laid their school’s covenant on the altar. Together, we pledged to strive for practical reconciliation, justice, and deeper cultural recognition within our classrooms and the broader community.

Our new FIRE Carriers have promised to be the "Living Flames" that ignite a new dreaming of true justice, compassion, and hope. We look forward to seeing the incredible initiatives they will bring to our school community this year.
