Year 2 Excursion to the Mawson Lakes Planetarium - Tuesday 18 June

A permission note was sent home yesterday and needs to be returned by Tuesday.

Year 2 students from 1/2AK, 1/2Z and 2/3T will be going to the Adelaide Planetarium, Mawson Lakes next week on Tuesday 18th June. They will travel by school bus. Mr Trezona and Mr Kriewaldt will be supervising. We need 2 parents who are currently registered volunteers to also attend. The students will leave after recess (11.10am) and return by lunch (12.50pm). They only need to bring a drink bottle with them. There is no extra cost for the excursion. This is part of our Unit of Inquiry 'Sharing the Planet'. The students will be learning about patterns in the night sky, constellations and seasons.

Year 1 Excursion to Jubilee Lake - Tuesday 18 June

Year 1 students will walk 10 minutes to Jubilee Lake while the Year 2 students are at the Planetarium, next week on Tuesday 18 June. We need some parents who are currently registered volunteers to also walk with us. We will leave after recess (11.10am) and return before lunch (12.50pm). This is part of our Unit of Inquiry ‘Sharing the Planet.’ The students will be looking at the living things and how people look after the environment. Students will need to bring wet weather gear e.g. raincoats, umbrellas. If the weather is too wet, we will postpone the walk to another day. There will be an online permission acceptance for this excursion.

Take Home Books

Decodable and interest books are being sent home in the clear plastic envelope. Your child will need the clear plastic envelope at school in order to take books home. Interest books can be changed any day. We will remind students on Mondays.

Reading – We encourage approximately 10-15 minutes each night.

Home Inquiry

Look at a small area of ground in your front or back yard or at the park. What do you notice? Scientists often take a notebook with them and may draw what they see in detail, make notes about it and then research it. You might like to do this.

Mental Computation ideas

Adding 9 This strategy is used by adding 10 to a number and subtracting 1, for example, 9 + 7 is one less than 10 + 7, which is 17. So 9 + 7 must be 16. (Note: this is also used as a subtraction strategy, by taking 9 or 8). https://youtu.be/SoL5dGm3o98?si=Zlc7-cKxtQ0jfJj7

Learning for Week 8:

Literacy:

In Writer’s Workshop mini lessons, students will write questions for what they would like to know about a chosen topic and in Reader’s Workshop mini lessons, students will read non-fiction texts to find information for writing an information book.

Spelling

Each week there is a focus ‘sound of the week’. Students are introduced to groups of words which use the spelling patterns and revise the alternative spellings of vowel sounds.

The sound of the week is not intended to be a spelling list for you to teach your child at home. It is for you to be aware of what we are teaching at school and you are welcome to use the sound as a starting point for your child to share what they are learning.
