Acting Principal Update
Thursday 27 June 2024
Dear Families, Students and Community Members,
As the cooler weather rolls in, we have been involved in a few weeks of change ourselves. Our examination season finished smoothly with some exemplary behaviour by our Year 11 and Year 12 students in their General Achievement Test (GAT); this marked the move into Semester 2 for the whole school. Of course, a real highlight from the last two weeks of Term 2 were the Year 11 and Year 12 Formals; keep reading to find out more!
Michelle Robert: Recognition of service.
On Thursday 13th June, Michelle Roberts shared with the school community that after thirteen years of service to Mordialloc College she had made the difficult decision to resign, and to pursue options that allowed her more time to privilege her family. Michelle’s service was recognised at a network level, with Tim Wilson (SEIL) sharing news of Michelle’s contribution to education with the Kingston Network Community.
Of course, we will arrange a fitting event for staff to say their farewells; if any of you have any kind wishes that you would like me to pass on for you, please forward them to me so that we can make sure that they become a part of our farewell event for Michelle.
This news means that for Term 3, I will continue as Acting Principal; it has been a real privilege to have been in this role for the previous two terms, and I look forward to continuing to work with you in Term 3.
Grease - The Musical!!
I am putting out a plea to our wider school community, and have my fingers crossed that you will be able to support us.
If you are the proud owner of any 1950s props, accessories or attire, would you be able to donate them to our Production Team? We are specifically looking for any clothing that may work especially varsity jackets, any accessories (e.g. pearls, bows) that you have that may fit the bill would also be great.
Ideal colours are pastels (pink, blue, yellow) and black, white and red. Any size will do! Anything white, angel wings or fairy lights would be great for our Beauty School Dropout angels.
We are really aiming to turn this into a Mordialloc College Community Event so, if you are able to help, please contact the school email mordialloc.co@education.vic.gov.au so that we can arrange a safe way for you to drop off your donation.
Alongside this, we also have our Trivia Night on Friday 26th July.
If your business would be interested in donating a product or service as a raffle/giveaway prize, we would be extremely grateful. Examples of prizes that have been donated in the past are vouchers for use at your business, a buy one get one free dining deal, or a sample of the business’ product.
In exchange for your support of our production and Trivia Night, we will advertise your business and logo in the Production program booklet and other advertising material. If you would like to donate, please contact us on mordialloc.co@education.vic.gov.au.

Child Safe Code of Conduct and Child Safety Policy
Staff at Mordialloc College, including teachers, education support staff, office staff, the Assistant Principal/s and Principal are committed to providing a positive and supportive learning environment for all our students. Our staff take their work very seriously and feel privileged to be able to play an important role in your child’s education. Families and visitors to our school also have an important role to play in fostering a safe and inclusive environment for the entire school community.
Informing and involving our families about our Child Safe procedures gives you a greater understanding of child safety. It supports you to discuss child safety with your children, to share any child safety concerns with the school, and contribute to improving the school’s child safety policies and practices that we have here.
Please see our current Child Safe Code of Conduct and Child Safety Policies here:

Year 11 and Year 12 Formals
Our Year 11 and Year 12 Formals were an amazing way to see out Semester 1.
The Year 11 formal was held at the Dingley Hotel, and was a great evening of food, dancing and wonderful outfits; I had the pleasure of being taught some of the ‘Nutbush’ moves, I definitely need a bit more practice before I can compete with Year 11! A big thank you to Kellie Goebel and Bella Barker for the fantastic organisation of this event.
On Friday 21st June, we attended the Southern Golf Club for our Year 12 formal. The entire evening was compèred by our Year 12 students, who also organised the ‘Formal Awards’ including the awards for the Formal King and Formal Queen. This was a really special evening; it was so obvious that making memories was top of the list for the students, with the camaraderie between them really reflecting what a great Year 12 cohort we have. A big thank you to Angela Holloway for the great organisation of this event.
General Achievement Test (GAT)
The GAT was held last week in the school gym on Tuesday 18th June. This included all Year 12 Vocational Major students, Year 12 VCE University Pathway students, and any Year 11 student studying a Unit 3 and 4 sequence of study.
All students complete Section A (Literacy and Numeracy) so that they are provided with the opportunity to demonstrate that they meet the Victorian Literacy and Numeracy Standards expected at a senior secondary level.
Section B is completed by students studying a Unit 3 and 4 sequence, and it is a test of general knowledge and skills in maths, science, technology, the arts and humanities.
As per previous years this part of the GAT results will be used to help calculate a student’s Derived Examination Score for any student whose exam performance is affected by illness, accident, or personal trauma. The GAT results are also used to help validate the accuracy of school based and external assessments. As with any assessment at Mordialloc College, we encourage students to strive for their personal best in completing the GAT, and to put in 100% effort.
2025 Course Selection
As was advertised in our last newsletter, students in Years 9 and 10 have had the opportunity to engage with the course selection process for 2025; Ms Bastin provided some great supporting resources and, I am including these again below:
Our Careers Practitioner Doanvy Roberts has been supporting students with their pathway decisions and the next stage is for all students in Years 9, 10 and 11 to have a dedicated course confirmation interview with a member of staff early Term 3, where their final subject selections for 2025 will be finalised in consultation with their families.
Further information about this process will follow from the Senior School team about these scheduled appointments.
Reporting
We have had a positive start to Semester 2 classes; I must say a huge thank you to families who have supported the school by ensuring that their child comes in the correct uniform, with the correct equipment, and with a positive mindset for learning.
A reminder that Semester 1 reports will be available on the Compass parent and student portals on Friday 28th June.
Please, download those reports, speak about them with your child over the holiday, and agree some goals to build on this information and to have an even more successful journey into Term 3! If there are any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher by email via the Compass app, or address them in our Semester 2 Parent Teacher Interviews.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent Teacher Interviews for Years 7 - 12 will be held in week 7 of Term 3 on Wednesday 28th August; further information to follow next term.
Reminder of Key Dates
I really do wish you an amazing End of Term break; I will be flying back to the UK to see my own family over the holiday. I look forward to seeing you all in Term 3.
