Grade 5 - 6
Reading
Over the past two weeks, students have been focusing on a range of both fiction and non-fiction texts. They have been practising their ability to make inferences and then searching through the text to support these inferences with clues. This has enhanced their critical thinking and comprehension skills, allowing them to engage more deeply with the material. The students have also enjoyed discussing their inferences and evidence with their peers during group activities.
Writing
Students have been developing their ability to plan, research, draft, edit and publish explanation texts on topics such as “The Life Cycle of a Chicken” and “How Volcanoes Erupt”. During these lessons, they have focused on using Tier 3 (topic-specific) vocabulary. Additionally, they have incorporated non-fiction text features like glossaries and diagrams to elaborate on their writing, enhancing both clarity and detail. The integration of these elements has significantly improved their ability to convey complex information effectively.
Maths
In Mathematics, students have been focusing on 3D shapes and nets. They have also explored cartesian coordinates, shape transformations and tessellations. These lessons have helped them understand geometric concepts and their practical applications, reinforcing their problem-solving and spatial reasoning skills. Moreover, students have participated in hands-on activities that further solidified their understanding of these mathematical concepts.
