Initia Lit – Reading
Over the past fortnight we have met two more new friends and learnt their corresponding new sounds – Lou Lou Ladybug and Kelly Kitten! This has meant that we can read and write even more words.
During our Storybook lessons, students continued looking at the book, ‘Potato People’ by Pamela Allen. We have acted out some interesting words ‘gradually,’ ‘droop,’ and ‘exclaim.’ We have also made connections to our own lives and vegetables we like and talked about how vegetables are grown.
Students have been continuing to use sound knowledge to segment and blend CV (consonant vowel) and CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words. We have practiced words like let, lip, log, let, kid, kit and kip.
We have also looked at capital letters, and how some look the same as their lowercase letter, and some look different. We have also been learning that names have capital letters at the start, and that we always have a capital letter at the start of a sentence.
We learnt some new tricky words – we, me, be, she, he and has. We have continued to practice our other tricky words as well - a, the, my, is, I, was, you, to, are, they, and that.
Maths
In Maths this past fortnight, we have been deepening our learning about all things numbers 0-10. Students have been counting forwards and backwards, sequencing numbers, learning 4-letter numbers names and becoming experts at number formation. We have been playing number name bingo, hopscotch and ‘I have, who has’ to practise our number recognition. Students have practised making collections through a number of different activities such as shopping for groceries and creating our very own ’10 Black Dots’ book. We have practised our number formation by doing some really fun activities such as using shaving cream, playdough and chalk. Students have continued practising sequencing numbers by using dominoes and sequencing all the food that the Hungry Caterpillar ate. Our little mathematicians are doing an amazing job!
Integrated
Over the past few weeks we have continued looking at different families in Integrated. After reading ‘Just the way we are’ by Jessica Shirvington, we compared our families to our classmates. Students have also shared their family backgrounds and what makes them unique. We also enjoyed some special activities for Reconciliation Week as well as dressing up!
Prep students have explored different strategies to manage their emotions. We played a game called ‘Emotion Statues,’ where students had to act out different emotions and then had to use strategies such as positive self-talk, talking to trusted adults and mindfulness activities like breathing to come back to the green zone.
Splash Water Safety Incursion
Prep students were lucky enough to attend an incursion where they learnt about being safe around water.
