FOUNDATION

Last Tuesday, the Foundation students reached 50 Days of School. Time is certainly going by very quickly! We hope that all mums and grandmothers in the Foundation area had a wonderful Mother’s Day yesterday and that you enjoyed the special gifts your children prepared for you.

We welcome Damian Carosella, a 3rd Year Teaching student from LaTrobe University. He will complete his placement in Foundation AM over the coming weeks. It has been great to have Parent Helpers come into our Learning Spaces to assist with the learning. Timetables for assistance will be placed in your child’s Learning Space each Thursday for parents to add their names. It is a requirement that Parent Helpers complete a session with Vira before being able to assist in the spaces.

Last Friday, the Foundation area was overwhelming with joy as we welcomed our mums, grandmothers, aunties and other special people into our spaces. It is lovely to be able to share our wonderful learning experiences with the people we love the most. We started the day with breakfast and a heartwarming assembly. To finish off a special morning, we celebrated our special people with some activities and games in our learning spaces. We are so lucky to have such kind and caring people who love us very much!

As writers, we have been learning about adjectives! Did you know, an adjective is a word we can use to describe different things such as people and objects. We tuned in to adjectives by using our lovely Foundation teachers as models. Some of us described our teachers as kind, lovely, wonderful, gorgeous, cool and even sparkly! To apply our new knowledge on adjectives, we have been using our own photos from Inquiry to describe what we look like as a baby. We came up with words such as small, tiny, cute, little, short and happy to add further detail to our writing. Next week, as thinkers, we will describe photos of ourselves of what we look like now and compare our thinking.

On Friday 17th May, everyone's invited to begin the day walking from Shore Reserve to school to celebrate “Walk Safely to School Day”. Breakfast will be eaten at school. Please  remember to bring in a bowl and spoon. If you intend to walk from Shore Reserve, please be there ready to leave at 8:15am. Parents must accompany their children on the walk. After the breakfast, Mass will be celebrated in recognition of Family Week. Mass will begin at 9:30am.

Just for this week, the Foundation specialist classes for all three grades have been moved from Tuesday to Thursday, therefore sports uniforms will need to be worn on Thursday instead of Tuesday.

Kind regards,

Leanne Wenckowski, Alex Phillips and Alycia Marsico

YEAR 1/2

MOTHER’S DAY

It was a week full of gratitude as we were busy creating gifts and cards to show our appreciation for our mothers and mother figures. We hope that all of the mums enjoyed the Mother’s Day assembly and activities back in the classroom. It was a pleasure having you all in the space and we hope you had a beautiful weekend with your families.

STEM

Collaborationcommunication and creativity was evident last week in the STEM space as the Year 1/2 students worked together to build a network of trains with LEGO. As collaborators and innovators, we had to connect three loop tracks together and use coding to guide the trains around without colliding with each other. It was a challenge, but we showed perseverance and put in hard work to make it happen! Choo choo, all aboard!

DISCOVERY

This week, the Year 1/2 students will be engaging in their first Discovery session. As thinkers, last week, we discussed what it means to be a learner in Discovery - what it looks like, sounds like and feels like, as well as what learning assets we will be using. We are all very excited to take charge of our learning through play and find out new things.

A reminder that the timetable for Parent Helpers is up on the door in front of the 3/4BP room downstairs. Looking forward to seeing you throughout the week.

YEAR 3/4

As a community, we celebrated Mother’s Day with the special women in our lives. The morning started with a lovely breakfast and whole school assembly with a dedication video. Our special women joined us in the learning spaces where they shared their life experiences with us through a Q&A.

As inquirers, we have been self-reflecting and assessing our own capabilities as thinkers, researchers and self-managers. As researchers, we have finding out historical events and summarising the events in our own words. We have used the 5W’s (Who, What, When, Where, Why) to help us write about many events, such as The First Fleet, The Gold Rush and Burke & Will Expedition.

As innovators, we began designing our prototype to help make a difference to others and the environment. We looked at the steps in the design process and how we can follow the process to create a design. We are very excited to see what we create!

As mathematicians, this week we used Coles, Woolies and Kmart catalogues to extend on our addition skills. From creating shopping lists for Mother's Day gifts to planning a budget-friendly feast, we learned how to solve practical maths problems in the most efficient way.

Have a lovely week!

Year 3/4 Teachers,

Belinda Panzarino & Sarah Hogan

YEAR 5/6

As inquirers, we gathered in the SLA to brainstorm and identify an agreement when working together in our Inquiry groups. This is where we identified ways of being collaborative members in our learning community. We identified above-the-line learning, the things that we want to see and show when working in our groups, and below-the-line learning, the things that we do not want to see when we are collaborating.

In our mathematical thinking, we have continued our contest of renovating the nicest and most cost-effective apartment. Students had the time and opportunity to engage in their Kitchen and Lounge Room this week for the Block challenge. Students were given blocky dips which may or may not have benefitted their renovations!

As one way of finding out about features in information texts, we explored a range of different levelled information texts. We identified different features of these texts in small groups, using highlighters to code different features, including nouns, adjectives, verbs and conjunctions.

This week in our SLA meeting, Violet and Zac shared their Liturgy for Mother's Day. Thank you to Violet, Zac, and Angelina for making such a wonderful presentation!

We congratulate Miss Sargent's class as they presented such a wonderful Mother’s Day Assembly on Friday. Thank you to the Mothers who joined us on Friday in the SLA, we had an absolute blast having you join us in our spaces. We hope you all had a wonderful weekend of celebrations.

We hope you have a wonderful week!
