Orchestra Victoria Workshops

On Wednesday May 1st, members of Orchestra Victoria came to King's College to conduct some workshops. Orchestra Victoria is the professional orchestra that plays for ballets and opera in Melbourne, but they also do some education work across the state.

In the morning there was a concert band workshop, where King's students and students from other schools in the district worked with a flute, oboe, clarinet, two trumpets, French horn, trombone, tuba and percussionist on music that will be performed later in the year at the Warrnambool Show.

In the afternoon, string players from across the region played with the violinist John Noble. John led a workshop on new music and gave some terrific performing advice. He is one of the premier string clinicians in the state. He was assisted by a double bass player.

This was an incredible opportunity for our young musicians to work with professional players in an environment focused on learning and improving.

Year 11 Creswick Camp

From Monday 29th April to Wednesday 1st May, Year 11 students embarked on an unforgettable camp experience at the picturesque Log Cabins Homestead in Creswick. This much-anticipated event was all about team building, adventure, and celebrating the journey of being Year 11 students.

Nestled in the serene landscape of Creswick, the Log Cabins Homestead provided the ideal backdrop for a variety of exciting activities designed to challenge and unite students. The camp’s focus on teamwork and camaraderie ensured that students left with stronger bonds and cherished memories.

The camp schedule was packed with a diverse range of activities that catered to all interests and adventure levels. Students kicked off their adventure with Clip n Climb, where they tested their climbing skills in a fun and safe environment. One of the standout moments of the camp was the Night Hike, organised entirely by the students. The most popular route was led by a group of students navigating the dark, which added a sense of adventure and accomplishment as they explored the natural beauty of Creswick under the stars. On our return to the Homestead, students made Damper on a wood-burning fire, fostering a sense of community and relaxation.

The adrenaline continued the next day with the Flying Fox, a thrilling ride that had everyone soaring through the air. For those looking to test their balance and teamwork, Milk Crate Stacking was a favourite, while the Leap of Faith pushed students to step out of their comfort zones and embrace new challenges. The Zipline and Giant Swing provided more high-flying excitement, leaving students with a sense of accomplishment and exhilaration.

In addition to these heart-pounding activities, students also participated in Hut Building, an exercise that combined creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving. This activity not only honed their practical skills but also reinforced the importance of collaboration and communication. Throughout the camp, the spirit of togetherness and celebration of being Year 11 students was commendable. The group activities and shared experiences allowed students to connect on a deeper level, creating lasting friendships and memories.

As the camp came to a close on Wednesday 1st May, students returned home with a sense of achievement, strengthened relationships, and stories they will cherish for years to come. The Year 11 camp at Log Cabins Homestead Creswick was truly an adventure to remember, marking an important milestone in their educational journey.

Bridie - I enjoyed getting closer to the people in my class as I am new to the school this year.

Isabella -Getting to hike in the dark with torches on the night walk was good fun, and milk crate stacking was my other favourite activity, even though our stack fell over with only 10 seconds to go (so we lost that round) - the girls still won overall though!

Max -It was enjoyable leading the group through the night walk. Although it went awful it was a lot of fun walking through fields where there were tracks right next to us, talking to my friends, talking over the walkie-talkies and trying to be the best leader I could be, although I did not do a good job of it. I promised to lead the group somewhere and I did.

Lachlan -The camp was fun and I had a good time. We got to do many fun activities including the Flying Fox which was probably my favourite activity because you got to go so quickly.

Carly -I enjoyed working as a team throughout this camp, this camp differently brought the class closer together, and the activities were fun but my favourite activity was the giant swing. The night walk was very exciting because we didn't know where we would end up after going the wrong way too many times.

Kayla -My favourite highlight of the Year 11 camp would have to be leading the night walk, even though we got lost and went the wrong way multiple times. It was enjoyable and I got to talk in a walkie-talkie to Max at the front of the group.

Kiara -The camp was awesome!

Muhammad -The camp was an unforgettable and enjoyable experience. I got a lot of time to chill with my friends. The food at camp was very yummy. The hike was super fun and amazing, walking through the dark and stuff was quite fun. My favourite activity was making a damper and beating Max at every game of pool we played, and also playing Crossy Roads even though I was awful.

First Aid Course

On May 13 and 14, our Year 9 students gained their First Aid qualification. We split the large cohort in two to allow for more interactivity between our students and the instructor.  Our Year 9's are now better equipped to handle emergency situations and will be able to add this certificate (HLTAID010 - Provide Basic Emergency Life Support) to their resumes. Thank you to Jade Drake from Summit First Aid for conducting the course for our students.
