National Reconciliation Week
On Sunday 26 May 2024, we marked National Sorry Day. On this day each year we as a nation remember the grief, suffering and injustice experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities, whom we now know as the Stolen Generations.
Importantly, National Sorry Day leads into National Reconciliation Week (Monday 27 May to Monday 3 June 2024). This year’s theme, ‘Now more than ever’, reminds us to continue the justice and rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
During the week, students participated in activities to recognise and commemorate National Sorry Day & National Reconciliation Week. Our foundation students and their buddies enjoyed an afternoon decorating paper hand prints which were pasted on a huge poster and is displayed on the staff room windows on George St.
We acknowledge the Indigenous students who attend our school and thank Tyrell, KESO (Koorie Engagement Support Officer) who visits our school on a regular basis and supports our Koorie students.
The National Reconciliation Week 2024 artwork and design represent the momentum of the theme Now More Than Ever. The chevron, a universal symbol for pointing the way, signifies advancing as one as we look towards a reconciled future; and the vibrant artwork of Gubbi Gubbi artist Maggie Douglas encourages connecting with one another, understanding and continuing to move forward.
