ARC CIRCUS DANCE THEATRE

Last Friday, it was our privilege to have Robbie and Lizzy from Arc Circus perform some tricks for the students and staff. Arc Circus is a multi-faceted international performing arts company from the Gold Coast. Robbie and Lizzy called into Sacred Heart on their way to Gunnedah to perform at Kurrumbede Homestead on Saturday. There, they celebrated and created extraordinary stories, bringing them to the audience through the power of circus, dance, and theatre.

We were extremely lucky to have such talented performers to excite the students with their juggling and unicycle acts. We are sure that many of the students went home over the weekend to master the juggling skills they were taught, whether with balls or folded-up socks.

Thank you, Robbie and Lizzy, for making a very special appearance at Sacred Heart Boggabri.

NORTH WEST SCIENCE CHALLENGE

Students from across the district gathered to participate in the Rotary Club of Narrabri, North West Science and Engineering Challenge.

The annual initiative encourages students to exercise their science, technology, engineering, and math skills by conducting a series of fun and practical experiments.

The Science and Engineering Challenge is a nationwide STEM outreach program presented by the University of Newcastle in partnership with communities, Rotary clubs, universities and sponsors. It is designed to provide Year 5  and 6 students with a positive experience.

Grace, Emily, Kiarah, and Jaylah represented Sacred Heart at this event at the Crossing Theatre in Narrabri. The schools were divided into 8 groups, with each group working on 2 half-day activities: one in the morning and a different activity after lunch.

Grace, Emily, Kiarah and Jaylah's activities were:

Earthquake

Our team had to design and build a tower strong enough to withstand seismic (shaking) loads in case an earthquake struck. The tower had to be tall, strong and remain stable during the shaking test with an earthquake simulator.

The tower was built using masking tape, paper, and straws. Each team was given a rectangular baseboard with bolts secured to it. These bolts were used as the foundation for each tower. Each tower needed to be firmly attached to the bolts on the baseboard. The tower also had to have a sheet of cardboard at the top to hold the test weights.

Get Over It

Our team had to design and build a strong, lightweight bridge to transport heavy freight. The stronger the bridge, the more freight the train could transport. Our bridge design needed to be simple, without compromising on strength.  The bridge had to be fitted into the U-shaped aluminium cradle from limited materials.  Later in the session, our cradle was placed into the test rig and a trolley loaded with weights to run across the bridge.

This was a great experience for our students, and we would like to thank everyone involved in making this Science and Engineering Day a great success.
