Inside Classrooms

Cohort and Specialist Updates

Foundation:

This fortnight in Foundation, students have learnt new sounds /l/, /r/, /h/ and have practiced decoding and encoding them in words. In Literacy students have been learning about non fiction texts and began writing information reports about farm animals. In Mathematics, students have been learning about 2 dimensional shapes and 3 dimensional objects. Students in Foundation also attended their first excursion to Animal Land Farm where they enjoyed pony rides, milking the cow, feeding and patting the animals.

Year 1/2:

This month has been filled with exciting learning opportunities for our 1/2 students! They've delved into the amazing world of animals, creating informative posters to showcase their chosen species and the habitats they live in. This exploration will help to support engaging discussions and critical thinking during our upcoming excursion to the Werribee Open Range Zoo on May 31st.

In Literacy, our students have been looking at facts and opinions. Students have applied this knowledge during their independent investigations. When writing, students are continuing to build their stamina, editing and revising skills when responding to picture-prompts.

Meanwhile, in Numeracy, our students have been telling the time through a variety of engaging activities. Students have used model clocks and have played time-based games to support skill development when telling the time.

Year 3/4:

On Tuesday the 14th of May, our 3/4 students embarked to the vibrant hub of biodiversity and conservation: the Melbourne Zoo. From the moment we stepped through the gates, anticipation filled the air. Students spent the day with their class groups, each led by their teachers, Educational support staff and select parent helpers. Through an interactive workshop and engaging presentations, our students delved into how to examine a habitat for Flora and Fauna. Students were asked to collect data from their surroundings in small groups, some of the data they collected included finding evidence of living things, insects and identifying native plants.

As we bid farewell to the Melbourne Zoo, students had a newfound knowledge and appreciation for the natural world. Our journey had not only been a day of adventure but an exploration between the balance of human impact, environmental sustainability and identifying the habitats of unique animals. Until we meet again, Melbourne Zoo, thank you for an engaging day out as well as big thank you to Ms Krystal for organising the day and all of the staff and parents for making the day possible.

Year 5/6:

Over the last few weeks, Grade ⅚ students have been engaging in literature texts ‘Dry to Dry’ and ‘Desert Lake’ exploring animal adaptations in Kakadu National Park and Kati Thanda - Lake Eyre. Students have been writing explanation texts about chosen animals that explore the three types of survival adaptations: Behavioural; Structural & Physiological.

Last week, grade 5 students were fortunate enough to be invited to Buckley Park College to engage in some practical STEAM lessons and have their own personal tour of the college. This was a great experience for all students to see what it is like to be a highschool student.

Specialists:

This term in Performing Arts, students are harmonizing their learning experience through the vibrant world of music with Boomwhackers. These colourful, lightweight instruments provide an engaging and hands-on approach to understanding rhythm, melody, and teamwork. From exploring basic concepts like tempo and pitch to orchestrating complex compositions, students are tapping into their creativity while developing essential musical skills. Each class are working on their own song with Boomwhackers. Learning music has become a symphony of fun and discovery across all classes from Foundation to year 5/6’s, igniting a passion for melody in every student!

Cultivating Community

Grade 3/4 students have been busy in the school food garden this term. Some highlights have been:

-learning about the different minibeasts the live in our garden habitats.

-Turning the last of our summer basil into tasty nut free pesto.

Happy winter gardening everyone!
