Student leadership in 2025

By Chloe Martinich, Leading Teacher (Student Voice)

Term 1 has been full of leadership elections, selections and training for our Year 7-11 leaders and student representative council. We have a wonderful and passionate group of students leading initiatives and championing student voice at Box Hill High School.

Message from our 2025 School Captains

Hello Box Hill High School Community! We, Amiya, Marcus and Cheryl, are excited to be your 2025 School Captain Team! We have each loved our time at Box Hill, Amiya and Marcus from Year 7 (shoutout to 7F) and Cheryl since joining in Year 10, and we are thrilled to be able to give back as leaders this year. We are all incredibly passionate about making lasting change, big or small, as we know every little thing counts. We hope to foster a school environment where students feel safe and excited to participate in whatever they choose, fostering school spirit and connectiveness.

We have gotten started with our work already, but please if anyone has any ideas or just wants a chat, approach us at anytime, we're always down for a conversation! We hope everyone has enjoyed their first Term of 2025, and we look forward to going through the rest of the year together!

Year 12 Prefect Team Highlights

  • Our House Captains (Ava, Taj, Nate & Louie) experienced huge success at our Swimming Carnival earlier this term. Students proudly participated in house chants and house spirit was high as we had lots of participation in swimming, diving and novelty events to earn points.

  • Our Community Prefects (Harper & Georgia), alongside Vice-Captain Cheryl and School Captain Amiya hosted and were panel members in our International Women’s Day breakfast event.

  • Our International Prefect (Gavin) has played an integral role in celebrating Cultural Diversity week by choosing music for our bells that reflects the cultural backgrounds of students at BHHS. He has been keeping students informed and has encouraged participation of students in events happening around the school.

  • The Prefect Team have been involved in panel interviews helping to select our younger student leaders and have been active in running team-building activities for these students in leadership induction sessions.

Student Representative Council (SRC)

Introducing our 2025 Co-Presidents:

Hey everyone! I’m Milly, one of the co-presidents of the SRC. I’m currently in Year 11, and my goals for this year are to finish ongoing projects and to actively seek opinions from the general student body to make sure your voices are heard. I believe student voice is incredibly important – especially in the time we’re living in – as it fosters a sense of leadership and action, which is how change happens.

Hey guys, I’m Anika (Year 11), and I am also the co-president of SRC. My goal for this year, is to not only finish ongoing projects but to implement as many projects as we can this year, to make 2025 the most memorable and eventful year! I also want to focus on building positive relationships within the SRC by recognizing the achievements of the members of SRC who have successful completed their projects that they have been working very hard on, as well as ensuring all year levels are up to date with what has been happening in SRC over the term.

The SRC stands for the Student Representative Council. As the name suggests, we are a student-led organisation dedicated to improving our school so that everyone can enjoy their time at BHHS. Our purpose is to act as representatives for student voice; to take your issues and concerns and hopefully find a solution. One way that we do this is through our projects, which we decide at the start of each year.

This year one of our projects is to continue work on adding more water fountains to our school. In a form sent out to the BHHS community in 2024, students agreed that due to our steadily increasing population, more water fountains would be beneficial so that everyone can stay hydrated and skip the line. We are also continuing our School Garden project to maintain its upkeep and make sure it becomes even greener, so that everyone has a place they can go to hang out and learn.

Perhaps the most fun addition is the possibility of having Semester Parties, but the logistics are still being worked out!

Year 11 Leaders

Year 11 leaders were elected by their peers after completing a written application to nominate and presenting a speech to their year level. Students had to articulate their leadership skills, their contributions to the school and what they appreciate about their peers. Congratulations to the following students:

Year 10 Middle School Captains

Year 10 Middle School Captains were appointed after an application and interview process. Students had to speak to their strengths and share ideas about how they would like to improve the school community if they were successful applicants. Thank you to the year 12 prefects for assisting as panel members and helping give our year 10 students feedback on their interview skills. Congratulations to the following students:

Class Captains

Year 7-9 class captains were appointed after students nominated themselves, gave a speech to their homegroup about their leadership skills and were voted in. There are 2 class captains per form group. Congratulations to the following students:
