Road/traffic safety

by Mr Michael Oaten, Assistant Principal

Student safety at drop off and pick up

To ensure student safety, and the safety of other road users, if you drop off / pick up your child from school please:

  • only use the service road on Whitehorse Road. To avoid traffic congestion, drive further up the service road to avoid a ‘bottle neck’ outside the school.

  • do not pull over on Middleborough Road and allow your child to exit the vehicle.

  • cars are not permitted to stop (even for drop off / pick up) in the Loading Zone out the front of the school. Council may impose a fine for road users that use this as a drop off spot / waiting area.

  • If your child walks/rides/skates/scoots to school, please remind them to only cross at traffic lights when the green person lights up. Students must only use the underpass on Middleborough Road if they enter / exit BHHS from the Middleborough Road entrance.

Commuting to school: e-scooters and bikes- reminders and etiquette

To ensure the safety for your child and community members, we ask that parents/carers remind their child about important road safety etiquette and practices if they commute to school using a bike / e-bike / e-scooter. This is a timely reminder as we have had various community members feedback to us recently that some BHHS students have not been displaying respectful road etiquette and safety practices whilst commuting to school.

  • Cyclists over the age of 12 are not permitted to ride on a footpath unless they are supervising a young person under 12.

  • A helmet must be worn at all times.

  • On a shared-use path, commuters must keep to the left and give way to pedestrians

  • When overtaking pedestrians, commuters must ring their bell (or verbally notify) in advance, slow down and make sure they leave enough space when overtaking.

  • Commuters must travel at a safe speed, especially around pedestrians on shared-use paths and footpaths and slower commuters.

  • E-scooters are not permitted on footpaths unless it is a shared-use path.
