Celebrating languages at BHHS

by Ms Dorothea Bruns, Languages Domain Leader

A huge well done to all our students studying German and Chinese at Box Hill High School this year! From our enthusiastic Year 7 learners to our dedicated VCE students, everyone has made a fantastic start. Our Year 11 and 12 students in Chinese as a Second Language, Chinese as a Second Language Advanced, Chinese First Language, and German have already completed their first SACs and Outcomes, showing great commitment and progress. A big thank you to our Languages teachers for their ongoing support!

Harmony Day & Diversity Week

This year’s Diversity Week and Harmony Day were a vibrant celebration of the many cultures that make up our school community. Students enjoyed cultural performances, language activities, and fun challenges like Mahjong, German tongue twisters, calligraphy, and Pictionary. The week was a wonderful reminder of how language and culture bring us together!

Spotlight: Year 7 Chinese

Year 7C explored the evolution of Chinese pictographs, uncovering how ancient symbols transformed into modern characters. They then brought their learning to life by creating original stories using pictographs. Their creativity and enthusiasm were truly inspiring—thank you, Ms Xu, for leading this exciting project!

PASCH Scholarship Winner!

Congratulations to Fatima A (10C) on receiving a fully funded PASCH scholarship from the Goethe-Institut! She’ll attend a three-week course in Germany this June.

Fatima says: “I’m so honoured to represent Australia and excited for this incredible experience!”

BJR Exchange Reflection

As Max’s exchange at BHHS comes to an end, he reflects: “I loved my time here! The students and teachers were so welcoming. I especially enjoyed Systems Engineering—it was great to apply knowledge in real life.” A big thanks to his host, Philip S (10D), and family!
