Year 7 Melbourne Museum visit
by Mr Luke Jenner, BHHS Staff
On Wednesday 5 March, students from 7F to 7J took part in their first high school day excursion, heading to Melbourne Museum on the train from Laburnum station. Students explored the Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre where ancient stories and contemporary art painted a vivid picture of Australia's ancient heritage. Students drew upon traditional artefacts such as possum skin cloaks to explore what life in Australia was like prior to colonisation. Students were also able to see a recreated Eel Trap, which told the story of one of the world’s oldest aquaculture systems.
Students also visited the Melbourne Story gallery and audited the artefacts on display to evaluate what makes a good museum display. This knowledge will set them up nicely for our Term 2 project, “Night at the Museum.”
Students reported that they enjoyed learning content outside of the school environment and that the museum brought a lot of what we’ve been discussing in class to life.
Thanks to the BHHS members of staff who supported this trip: Mr Daniel Hagan, Ms Sophie Ioannidis, Ms Laurel Frackowski, Mr Aaron Leeson, Ms Monique Rice & Mr Darcy Muller.
