Wellbeing

As we embark on another exciting school year, I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the transition your child is making and offer some strategies to help them navigate this period with confidence and resilience.
This year, our College theme is Moments of Discovery, and we encourage all students to embrace the opportunities for personal growth, learning, and self-reflection that come with new experiences. For many students, the start of a new school year brings a mix of emotions - excitement, anticipation, and sometimes, anxiety.
This is particularly true for our Year 7 students, who are beginning their high school journey, and our Year 12 students, who are preparing for their final year of secondary education. Each of these transitions presents unique challenges, but with the right support, students can begin the year feeling secure and empowered.
Helping Year 7s Settle In Starting high school is a significant milestone, and it is natural for Year 7 students to feel a little overwhelmed.
You can assist your child by:
- Encouraging routine – Establishing a consistent morning and evening routine can create a sense of stability and predictability
- Building independence – Encourage them to take responsibility for organising their school materials, packing their own bag, and managing their timetable
- Normalising their feelings – Let them know that feeling nervous is completely normal and that many of their peers feel the same way. Sharing stories of your own experiences can also help reassure them
- Fostering connections – Encourage them to participate in school activities and social opportunities to help them build friendships and a sense of belonging
- Embracing moments of discovery – Help them see this transition as an exciting opportunity to explore new subjects, develop new skills, and form meaningful relationships
Supporting Year 12s Through Their Final Year
Year 12 is a year of growth, challenge, and important decisions. While academic pressure may increase, a balanced approach can make a world of difference.
Some key ways to support your Year 12 student include:
- Promoting balance – Encourage a mix of study, physical activity, and relaxation to maintain overall wellbeing.
- Offering reassurance – Remind them that their worth is not defined by their academic achievements. Praise their effort and progress, rather than focusing solely on results.
- Encouraging help-seeking behaviours – If they are feeling overwhelmed, remind them that seeking support from teachers, wellbeing staff, or peers is a sign of strength and resiliency.
- Maintaining open communication – Simply being available to listen without judgment can be one of the most valuable ways to support them.
Discovering strengths and passions – Encourage them to view this year as a time to explore their potential, set personal goals, and take pride in their journey of self-discovery.
At our College, we are committed to ensuring that all students feel safe, supported, and equipped to succeed. Our Wellbeing Team and Staff are always available to provide guidance and resources, and we encourage students and families to reach out if they need assistance.
Thank you for your ongoing partnership in fostering a positive and healthy school experience for your child. We look forward to a great year ahead, filled with Moments of Discovery for all students.
