Wellbeing Update: Newsletter Week 8, Term 1, 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

For our Wellbeing Update this week, I wanted to bring all of our new families up to speed on the PBL Framework that we use at St Kevin’s.

What is PBL?

PBL stands for Positive Behavior for Learning. Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is an evidence-based framework that brings together the whole-school community to contribute to developing a positive, safe and supportive learning culture. The framework assists schools to improve social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes for children and young people.

St Kevin’s School Values

Our PBL journey at St Kevin’s, started with students, teachers and families agreeing on three values that would underpin the heart of our school. Our school values are:

  • Respect
  • Responsible
  • Resilient

At St Kevin’s we also highly value the safety of everyone in our community and we take this into account when we talk about being responsible and respectful.

Expected Behaviors

Expectations are the valued beliefs or examples of behaviour  that we want students to display. Rules are the specific behaviours which define what students need to do to meet the expectations. Having clearly established expectations is one of the cornerstones of effective classroom and playground management. This term we have been focusing on these behaviours:

  • I keep my hands feet and objects to myself
  • I move safely
  • I raise my hand to speak
  • I follow the ICT agreement
  • I ask for permission to enter or leave a learning space

Having clear expectations for behaviour in every classroom can also help to:

• create a positive classroom environment

• provide all students with a sense of security

• reduce student anxiety

 • maximise learning time

• enable student self-monitoring

 • support positive behaviour

• ensure consistency.

Each week we focus on a particular behaviour. These positive behaviours are consolidated through:

  • Reminders during the morning ‘Welcome Circle’
  • Reminders over the PA before recess each day
  • Teaching moments using Social Stories
  • Positive reinforcement and rewarding positive behavior.

In our next newsletter I will share some more information about PBL in particular how students are acknowledged and rewarded for demonstrating positive behaviour.

Have a great week,

Fiona George
