Auslan

From Caen & Simone, Auslan Teachers
Learning thorough song
As we near the end of the term, we are so proud of the incredible progress our students have made in their Auslan learning! Over the past two weeks, we have focused on two engaging topics: School Signs and Farm Animals, and it’s been fantastic to see students grow in confidence and fluency.
School Signs
A major focus in our recent lessons has been school-related signs, helping students communicate about their daily classroom environment. They have learned how to sign the items in their stationery packs, recognize common school-related signs, and use them in simple sentences.
To make learning interactive, we introduced an Auslan quiz, turning sign recognition into a fun and engaging challenge. Students responded with great enthusiasm, and it was wonderful to see them actively participating and applying their knowledge in a playful yet educational way. Gamifying learning like this not only makes it enjoyable but also helps reinforce key signs in a memorable way!
Farm Animals – Learning Through Song
Our second focus was farm animals, where students expanded their vocabulary by learning how to recognize and sign different farm animals. To reinforce their learning, we incorporated music, signing along to “Old McDonald Had a Farm” in Auslan. This activity wasn’t just fun—it also provided valuable insight into Auslan grammar, which differs from English sentence structure. Additionally, the song helped improve fingerspelling skills, as students learned to spell out animal names and sign them correctly. This combination of music, movement, and signing made for an engaging and effective learning experience.
We are so impressed by the dedication and enthusiasm our students have shown. Their ability to recognize, sign, and use Auslan in real-life contexts has improved significantly, and we have attached a copy of the farm animal signs for all of you to sign and sign Old McDonald Had a Farm!
Keep practicing at home, and we look forward to another exciting term ahead.
