Year 5 News

From Matilda B, Year 5 Teacher
Naplan and Peer Language School
This fortnight in Year 5 has been a busy one! Students have been preparing for and sitting the NAPLAN tests for Numeracy, Reading, Writing and Conventions of Language. The Year 5 teachers are very proud of everyone’s focus and hard work in a disrupted week with lots of testing, well done Year 5s!
5A have been busy enjoying language school. Every Friday afternoon, a member of our class takes a turn at being the teacher. They teach us words and phrases from their home language, speak about the different foods and traditional celebrations unique to their culture, and take questions from the class.
Often, the Language School teacher for the day comes to school in traditional dress. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn from our peers, make cross cultural connections, and practice asking curious and respectful questions about our similarities and differences.
So far we have learnt about Somali culture from Akmam, Vietnamese from Miranda, Gaelic from Eamonn, Marathi from Tia, and Dutch from Max. Our Language School roster carries all the way into Term 2 and we are so looking forward to the many more presentations to come!
