Harmony Week 2025 – Cultural Diversity Survey – Class 8/9 Statistics & Probability Main Lesson

Harmony Week is a national celebration of Australia’s multiculturalism. It is a time to acknowledge and embrace the diverse cultures that shape our country while promoting respect, inclusiveness, and a sense of belonging for everyone.

This year, National Harmony Week begins on Monday, 17th March, and concludes with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on Friday, 21st March. Alice Springs is one of the most culturally diverse towns in Australia. According to the 2021 Census, 32% of our town’s population was born overseas, representing 60 different countries. Additionally, we proudly celebrate that 20% of our community is made up of Australia’s Indigenous First Nations people.

The colour orange is worn on Harmony Day as a symbol of support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia. Orange is associated with social communication, meaningful conversations, freedom of ideas, and mutual respect. Since the first Harmony Week event in 1999, orange has been the official colour of the celebration.

The Alice Springs Steiner School proudly celebrates its rich cultural diversity, with a student population hailing from all corners of the globe. Of the 120 students enrolled, we have a vibrant mix of backgrounds, including representatives from countries such as the USA, New Zealand, the Philippines, Germany, Mexico, Russia, and many more. With such a diverse array of nationalities—from European nations like Greece, Switzerland, and Italy to those from the Asia-Pacific region like Japan, Israel, and Papua New Guinea—our school fosters an environment of inclusivity, understanding, and mutual respect. This cultural richness is something we cherish, as it brings a unique depth to our community, making every day an opportunity to learn from one another.

Harmony Week Lunch - Multicultural Tastes

To celebrate this diversity, each class will be preparing dishes from selected countries on Monday 17th of March (Week 8). These will be presented and ready for sharing in the School Hall for lunch. This hands-on activity will allow students to share and experience the flavours and traditions of their classmates' cultures, further strengthening the bonds that make our school so special.
