English & Literacy

Year 7s have recently dived into an analytical pit, exploring the directorial decisions of the extraordinary Hayao Miyazaki in creating ‘Spirited Away’. Students have been equipped with resources to build their analytical writing skills, and we have already read some great insights from our students regarding the intended impacts behind creating the animated film. We wish all Year 7s the best of luck as they prepare for their final English KLT at the end of Week 6 and the start of Week 7.
Year 8s have also been busy - they have been working towards creating their own TED Talk recording. Students are able to select a topic of their choice, and follow the conventions of a TED Talk to educate, motivate and inspire a Year 8 audience. A few recordings have already been submitted to a very high quality - our Year 8 students should be proud of their efforts this term. The Year 8 teaching team eagerly await a special event on Friday 5th December, where selected students will have the rare opportunity to speak in front of a large audience in our Theatrette, presenting their TED Talk to other classes of Year 8 students.
Given the importance of English in the senior years as the only compulsory subject that every student must undertake in Year 12, it is imperative that our students are given the best possible chance at success in English. Therefore, Year 8s will be experiencing their first English Exam on Wednesday 3rd December in their English class. It will be a one-period exam that serves as an introduction to what preparing, sitting and reflecting on an exam feels like. Students will be equipped with study advice, and opportunities to discuss the exam in greater detail. The Year 8 team implore all parents and guardians to continue sending their child to school on a daily basis throughout Term 4 as they prepare and reflect on their upcoming English exam. This examination will not be reported on the Semester Report as it is their first attempt, and their first reportable examination will be held in Semester 1 of Year 9.
All students who have borrowed a book from the College Library must return their library books by Term 4 Week 9. Books must be returned directly to the student’s Literacy teacher (if they’re in Year 7), or English teacher (if they’re in Year 8).
