Year 8 Coordinators

Year 8 Update

We recently met with the Year 8 cohort for their second assembly of the term. This was a wonderful opportunity to check in with students, reinforce key expectations, and encourage everyone to finish the term with pride and positivity.

Uniform and Presentation Reminders

  • Take pride in wearing the full school uniform correctly.

  • No mixing and matching of uniform items.

  • Runners are for PE days only.

  • Jewellery, nails, and makeup should align with the school’s uniform policy.

Learning and Behaviour Expectations

Students were reminded about the importance of taking ownership of their learning and demonstrating maturity and respect in every class.

  • Be on time – every minute counts.

  • Be prepared with the correct equipment (and a working pen!).

  • Use lockers wisely – plan for two periods to stay organised.

  • Keep learning spaces tidy and focused.

The assembly also highlighted key events and lunchtime activities available this term, encouraging students to get involved, connect with others, and make the most of the opportunities on offer.

As we move into the final weeks of Year 8, our focus remains on building positive routines, strengthening learning skills, and celebrating student success.

Year 8 Student Success: Digital Wellness and Study Skills

In Student Success classes this term, Year 8 students have been focusing on Digital Wellness and understanding the expectations around technology use at Yarrabing. Following last term’s communication with families about new social media age restrictions, this lesson provided an opportunity to explore the idea of a social media pause rather than a ban. Students discussed both the positive and negative influences of social media and reflected on how to make healthy, balanced choices in their online lives.

Another focus area has been building strong study habits and personal routines. During Routine Builder sessions, students have been encouraged to use study time effectively by setting clear goals, staying focused on key tasks, and reflecting on their progress. These sessions aim to support students in developing the organisation and self-management skills that contribute to success both in and beyond the classroom.

We have also continued our work through The Resilience Project, supporting students to understand and practise the key principles of the GEM theoryGratitude, Empathy, and Mindfulness. These lessons encourage students to recognise the positives in their lives, show kindness toward others, and build emotional awareness - all important skills for their wellbeing and growth

Year 8 Rubicon Outdoor School Leadership Camp Update - School Visit

This week, we were excited to welcome Rubicon Outdoor School to Yarrabing! Their team visited our campers to help them prepare for the upcoming Rubicon Camp — a big milestone for Yarrabing, as it will be our first-ever school camp. During the session, students had the opportunity to practise using Trangia stoves safely and effectively. They learned how to set up, light, and use the stoves to make a warm drink — an important skill for outdoor cooking and camping life. The visit helped build confidence, teamwork, and enthusiasm for what’s sure to be an unforgettable camp experience. A big thank you to Mark and Chris for visiting!

Climate Resilience Garden Workshop

A select group of Year 7 and 8 students explored ways communities can grow food within a changing climate. Students did a fantastic job taking part in our Climate Resilient Garden Workshop! The worm farm they helped build will continue to support Aintree’s community garden and promote local sustainability. The school would like to thank We Love Aintree for the opportunity to participate in this valuable learning experience.

Woodlea Young Change Agents Program

A select group of Year 8 students had the opportunity to participate in the Young Change Agents program, which supports young people in developing an entrepreneurial mindset, skillset, and toolset. The program empowers students to create positive change in their communities through social enterprise.

Throughout the experience, students explored the needs of our community and developed innovative ideas to support the growth and wellbeing of everyone within it. They pitched their concepts in a networking environment and collaborated with local community members and businesses who provided valuable feedback and encouragement. Students also learned about the importance of advocacy, the power of using their voices to create change, and the value of building strong community connections. These lessons inspired them to see themselves as active contributors and leaders within their community. The school would like to thank all the partnering individuals and organisations who supported the program, especially Pauline from Woodlea and the Young Change Agents team. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and valued the opportunity to work collaboratively, think creatively, and make a difference.
