What has been happening in the Grade 3/4 Classrooms?

Over the past two weeks, even with a long weekend in the mix, our Year 3/4 students have been hard at work rehearsing for their wonderfully funny and entertaining performance of The Amazing Adventures of Super Stan on Monday night. Their enthusiasm and enjoyment really shone through on stage!

In Wellbeing, students have been continuing to practise calming strategies through the Zones of Regulation and have been exploring gender stereotypes through stories and discussion. They’ve also been learning positive ways to speak up and challenge situations where someone’s choices might be limited because of their gender.

Mathematics

Students have continued to consolidate their skills in division, as well as in learning to collect data, organise data, present data and interpret data (statistics).

All classrooms observed the Mankarr in its natural habitat and recorded how many times it was sighted in the video “Where is the Mankarr (Bilby)?”

When watching the video “Where is the Mankarr (Bilby)?” students tallied sightings of the Mankarr and other animals, such as wild cats or dingoes, that appeared in the footage. Some students recorded sightings by distinguishing between day and night, while others noted the appearance of each animal according to the specific day it appeared (for example, Day 7 or Day 22). This task required time, focus, and great attention to detail to ensure the data was collected accurately.

This week, students are using their collected data to create graphical representations in the Numbers App on their iPads. Using this app, they can display their findings in various formats such as column graphs, bar graphs, line graphs, or pie charts. After creating their graphs, students will evaluate which type of graph is most effective for interpreting and presenting their data.

Literacy

In reading, students have continued our class mentor text, Brindabella. In the last two weeks students have -

  • developed an understanding of anthropomorphism,
  • been challenged to express their opinions about the plot and characters in the story, providing reasoning for their opinions ,
  • analysed the word choice and language the author (Ursula Dubosarsky) uses to create imagery, sparking the senses of the reader to visualise and even hear the sounds of the bush in the setting like "...listening to the singing of the bees..." page 68, and
  • further investigated dialogue in a text.

Below are some examples of student work, based on Brindabella.

Students have also been continuing to develop their narrative writing skills and have been learning to write Sensational Starts to hook the reader in, write from the beginning of the story where "once upon a time" will never exist!
