Year 8 History Incursion

Year 8 History Incursion Brings the Past to Life

On Friday, 31 October, students from 8A Humanities and 8 Rise Humanities took part in an exciting History Incursion exploring the evolution of warfare.

The session, led by Michael Crosby, offered a fascinating journey through time — from the Ancient Greeks and Romans to the medieval period — showing how armour and weaponry have changed throughout history. Students were captivated by Michael’s explanations and the chance to try on real armour, experiencing firsthand the weight and design of historical battle gear.

The activity brought history to life in an interactive and memorable way, helping students understand not only how armour evolved but also why those changes occurred. Despite the heavy armour, the students stayed enthusiastic and engaged throughout the session.

We would also like to extend a huge thank you to Gary Campbell, who recommended Michael, a close friend of his, as a volunteer. Without Gary’s support, this immersive experience would not have been possible. Michael’s passion and craftsmanship were evident in every detail — from the armour he designed himself to the impressive portfolio showcasing his workshops over the years.

The Q&A session at the end was a highlight, revealing just how curious and inspired our students were by the presentation.

Thank you, Mike and Gary, for sharing your time, expertise, and enthusiasm with our Year 8 students — it was truly an outstanding experience!

A Student’s Opinion

‘The History Incursion was stunning. The Year 8's were able to learn about all the weapons and armor used in Ancient Greece and Rome and Medieval times. Michael Crosby came over to our school to share his collection of exact replicas of the armor and weapons, and his knowledge of the fighting styles that ancient and medieval times people would use to fight. There were a lot of interesting things to learn about and enjoy. This was one of my favorite incursions.’
