A Spotlight on Learning

A Spotlight on Learning in the SLC on Heights Campus
Our Year 6 students have reflected on their most treasured memories during their primary school years and have begun writing about them for their graduation booklet. With their graduation coming up in the last week of school term, they have also started practising for their graduation song and are already doing an amazing job at it. Our Year 5 students, on the other hand, have been engaged in persuasive writing as they wrote their applications to be part of next year’s student leadership. The potential leaders are preparing for their speech presentation to the Year 4 and 5 students who will be in SLC next year. The excitement and nervousness is building up.
In Reading, students have been learning to compare and contrast texts to understand how authors communicate meaning and influence readers. They identified and described similarities and differences between two texts and explained how the authors used language, images and structure to shape meaning.
In Mathematics, students have become more confident and proficient when solving multiplication and division problems involving whole numbers, fractions and decimal fractions. They have learnt about the different strategies to work out perimeters and areas of regular and irregular shapes. Working in small groups, they have also interpreted and responded to questions posed about the real-life data survey results based on our Student Opinion Survey results.
Students finished our Space Science unit on a high note. They presented their learning and understanding about our Solar System to MLC students during our Science Showcase. They shared their research project folder about Mars describing what it is like to live and work on another planet, and explained about different planets and their distances from the Sun using the Solar System model they created. Following on from that, our SLC students are learning to interpret health messages and advice, considering and exploring the various perspectives on health and analysing the credibility of the messages and campaigns.
Our SLC girls were very grateful for the opportunity to have a Basketball Incursion by Basketball Victoria. Their confidence has been boosted as they practised skills and techniques that will help them when playing basketball games or keeping active.
A huge congratulations to our SLC students! It has been wonderful to see how much they have grown and developed, both personally and academically, since the start of the year. The SLC teachers are extremely proud of all that they have achieved.
