Spotlight on Learning

Ephesus Community

Dear Families,

Due to the rain, the Ephesus community participated in a live Remembrance Day service indoors to honour those who served and continue to serve our country. Students stood side by side as we listened to the service delivered in real time over the speakers, our student leaders helped guide the service with confidence and care. Each class took part by observing a minute of silence, showing deep respect for the significance of the day. Students reflected on the meaning of sacrifice, courage and peace, recognising the impact of war on individuals, families, and communities.

We will remember them. Lest we forget.

This Week's Learning

Religious Education

This week, we created a poppy display for our Remembrance Day service. We also learned how our choices can bring fairness, peace, and care to others and to creation. Students focused on the scripture story of Zacchaeus and talked about how staying connected to Jesus and each other helps us grow and share God’s love. We also explored the scripture from John where Jesus said, “I am the vine, you are the branches.” We discussed how Jesus is our source of strength and love, and we grow when we stay connected to Him. This is also the theme for our Mass next week.

Christmas Carols: Below is the song we will be performing. If you could practise at home, that would be great!

Integrated Learning

We continued learning about Remembrance Day and how it inspires peace in our community. We also learned that caring for animals and the environment helps keep our communities healthy.  Our Success Criteria was to name one way animals help people or the environment. We linked this to our excursion from last week and  explored how zoos care for animals, protect endangered species, and help keep nature in balance. Students  linked this to how a healthy environment supports clean water, wellbeing, and strong communities.

English

In Reading and Daily Review , we learned about the base word “port” (meaning to carry) and found how its parts change the meaning with prefixes and suffixes and worked more on identifying the morphology. Morphology is the study of how words are made and how the parts of a word change its meaning. Students also learned to find the main clause and subordinate clause in longer sentences. In Writing, we continued reading The One and Only Ivan. The students continued our persuasive letter: “Wild animals should/should not be kept in circuses.” Students wrote the  first paragraph using a single paragraph outline. They wrote their write a topic sentence, which tells the main idea of the paragraph and answers who, what, when, where, why, or how.

Mathematics

This week, the students learned how to create maps and include key landmarks using a legend. Students practised drawing a map of our classroom and adding symbols to show different areas. We also learned about chance in Maths. First, we looked at events that are certain and impossible, then we sorted events on a probability line. We then explored events that are likely, unlikely, or have an equal chance of happening.

Social & Emotional Learning / RRRR

Last week, we learned that everyone has different feelings and body clues, and we practised using coping strategies to manage our emotions.

This week, the Year 3 students focused on how to make positive contributions in groups, work well with others, and manage our emotions even when they feel strong.

Next week the students will participate in a  KidsROAR session. KidsROAR's program aims to help prevent abuse, reduce violence in the community, and promote positive health and wellbeing through education on Personal Safety.

Auslan

This week the students began creating their own Auslan stories “In the Sea”. In the stories, students will dive underwater and describe the different sea creatures we see. The student draw a sea creature and practiced signing the animal, its colour, its shape, how it moves and what the animal might be thinking as it swims around
