Year 6

Spotlight on Learning

Bethlehem Community

 Dear Families,

In the countdown to the end of the year for our year 6 students, once again it has been jam packed.  The students have been doing assessment, visited by past students to talk about what happens when you start Secondary School and a day doing transition activities at St Peters.

Congratulations to Alabeka for her outstanding performance at the State Competition last week at Lakeside.  Alabeka came 5th overall in the 100m sprint, and came 1st in the hurdle event.  Amazing!

On Friday last week, the students went to Interschool sports at St Peters.  Students participated in cricket, basketball, handball and volleyball. The cricket team won their final and the handball team were runners up.  Both basketball and volleyball made the finals.  A great day was had by all. Here are some photos of the day.

Due to the weather, our Remembrance day ceremony was held in doors in our own community.  The year six classes joined together to commemorate all those who have served our country with the theme "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" - Matthew 11:28.  Thankyou to our social justice team, Nathan, Israh, Anne, Samarpal & Gian for leading the service for the whole school with Mr Mac.

The Transition day on Wednesday went very well, with very different weather to the day before!  Students took part in a range of classes that they will experience when they go to secondary school.  After a welcome in the theatre, Sport, Art, Scienc and Drama classes were part of our experience.

OUR LEARNING:

Religious Education:

This week students put aside their group projects to focus on Remembrance Day.  They  explored scripture to understand what Jesus meant by offering rest to the weary. This led to discussions about what life was like in Jesus’ time and who He was speaking to. This message was connected to the peace and remembrance we reflect on during Remembrance Day and described ways to bring peace and kindness to others today.  Next week students will return to their group project work.

English:

This week students undertook end of year assessment, while also continuing our class text.  Words such as idle and sniggered were explored and the students are continuing to build their persuasive letter about 'Dogs in Schools', by the end of the week their third argument was being built.

Next week the students will continue to practice their typing while being accurate, consolidate sentence structure skills, complete the construction of their persuasive letter with  a compelling conclusion and work on their memories of primary school in Year 1 & 2.

Mathematics:

This  week students began a unit about Data and Location. The focus this week was on reading co-ordinates on a Cartesian plane.  Students were learning which number is read first when reading co-ordinates and completing activities to show their skills and writing their own co-ordinates.

Integrated Studies:

This term's topic is 'Taking Charge of my Health'.  This week the students were looking at how to make informed choices.  After discussion, students had to identify if statements were Fact or Myth.  For example, 'Cracking your knuckles causes arthritis', is a myth - it doesn't cause arthritis but it can be very annoying!!  They then explored some websites to work out whether health information was credible.

Social & Emotional Learning:

This week students have looked at things that cause conflict within ourself and others called Stressors.  Students were asked to put themselves into the shoes of others to see how they are affected by stress.  They looked at what stress was around them in the classroom, the schoolyard, at home, in their community and at the shops.

Auslan:

This week students completed embedding previous learning and began learning about Formal and Informal Greetings, including their own name.  There were discussions about how your language changes when you are with friends compared to someone you have only just met.
