Year 5
Spotlight on Learning
Bethany Community
Dear Bethany Families,
The students have been completing their PAT assessments and have demonstrated great effort and focus. They should be commended for their hard work. Catch-up sessions will be held next week for any students who were absent.
Due to the weather, our Remembrance Day ceremony was held indoors within our own community space. The Year 5 students came together in class communities to honour and remember all those who have served our country.
We would like to congratulate all our students on a very successful fundraising event. Students put in an amazing effort, and it was wonderful to see their energy, enthusiasm, and happiness throughout the event. Their hard work and positive spirit made the event a great success

Next Week
Religious Education:
Next week, students will begin exploring how Jesus’ birth fulfilled the prophecies of the Old Testament. Over the next three weeks, they will investigate these connections in greater depth and complete a pre-assessment to demonstrate their current understanding.
English:
Next week, we will continue reading our novel The Last Bear and focus on vocabulary from the text. Students will also develop their understanding of connectives in writing, building on what they have learned so far: connectives of addition, contrast, and cause and effect. They will read a fluency passage in pairs, answer summarising questions, and use their notes about polar bears to complete a persuasive letter, working on their third argument and concluding their persuasive writing piece.
Mathematics :
Students will use key words to identify the correct operation for solving a worded problem, draw a bar model to represent the problem, and write an equation to show how it can be solved. The students will learn how to divide numbers that have been rounded up, down, and conventionally. Students will calculate and record the total cost of an item using a digital spreadsheet. They will also use spreadsheet features to calculate the sum total.
Integrated Studies:
Next week in Health, students will be exploring what respect and empathy mean. They will focus on identifying respectful and empathetic behaviours and explaining how these qualities can strengthen friendships. While watching role-plays, students will use their Detective Sheet to record behaviours that are respectful, empathetic, both, or neither, and reflect on their impact—considering how each behaviour made the person being treated feel and how it affected the relationship. They will then create a personal Respect and Empathy Pledge that is specific and realistic..
Social & Emotional Learning:
Next week, during the Kids ROAR session, students will be learning the scientific (biological) names for their body parts. They will explore why it is important to use the correct terminology and discuss how knowing these names can help them communicate clearly, understand their bodies better, and stay safe in different situations. Through this learning, students will develop both knowledge and confidence in speaking about their bodies accurately.
Auslan:
Next week, students will continue with end-of-year assessments and revise previously learned signs. They are trying to create a AUSLAN story for their chosen animal character. Ask your child which sign is their favourite and encourage them to demonstrate it for you.
HATS - During term 4, school hats are mandatory.
As students’ bodies and minds continue to develop, it’s important they start the day well-nourished. We kindly ask families to ensure that students come to school having eaten a healthy breakfast. A nutritious start to the day helps students maintain focus, energy, and a positive attitude throughout the morning, particularly during the first two hours of learning when concentration is vital. Thank you for your support in helping our students be ready to learn and do their best each day.
Reminder for students to bring in forks or spoons with their lunch.
