Science Week 2024

Science Week runs from the 12-16 August, and this year, the theme is ‘Species Survival: More Than Just Sustainability’. As usual, there will be plenty of activities running throughout the school to celebrate all things Science, including the daily Brain Break Quiz, Science Week Sniggerings and Lunchtime Lab Sessions. Information about daily activities will be displayed around the school each day. We will also be running a Think Tank discussion group and poster competition, both of which will focus on this year’s Science Week theme. Students interested in entering the poster competition can contact Ms McCarthy in the Science Lab for more detailed information. Posters need to be submitted by 14 August and will be displayed in the lab on 16 August.

By the way… Did I mention that there will be prizes awarded for both the poster competition and Brain Break Quiz!!

Book week is coming for all our readers...that is everybody!

For those who don't know, the whole school will dress up (including teachers) and bringing a gold coin donation. All proceeds go towards the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Start thinking now about what your child will be wearing. There will be many activities during the week including author and illustrator visits in the Primary Years, a story vending machine will be distributing student-written choose-your-own-adventure stories, a literary quiz in the Secondary Years and the fabulous Book Week costume parades.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN (National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy) is a standardised test designed to assess students' academic performance in key areas. Each year students in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 across the nation complete NAPLAN.

Earlier this term, envelopes were sent home to all families with NAPLAN results. Digital copies of this year’s results are also able to be viewed and downloaded from Schoolbox, accessible under your child’s ‘academic reports’ tab.

When reading the NAPLAN results, we remind parents that while NAPLAN serves as a valuable educational tool to identify areas of strength and areas for further development, it should not overshadow the comprehensive growth of our children. We encourage all parents to celebrate each and every child, help them to foster a growth mindset, and support their well-being throughout their education journey.

Each child is fearfully and wonderfully made, with unique gifts and purposes in God’s plan.

The Faamausili Family Shares Their Love for Rugby

We were privileged to represent Victoria in Adelaide during the holidays, competing in the Southern States competition and showcasing our skills on the field.

I, along with my siblings Joshua and Eliana, excelled in our respective teams: U18 girls, U16 boys, and U14 girls. Together, we performed admirably throughout the campaign, contributing to Victoria's overall success in winning the Southern States competition.

Furthermore, Joshua’s selection for the U15 Iron Armour team and an upcoming tour in NSW highlights his dedication, with further opportunities to trial for the U16 Rebels team. Meanwhile, Eliana and I are focusing on refining our talents with the Barbarians team in the Rebels Shield competition, engaging in spirited matches against schools like Fountain Gate and Grange. Additionally, we eagerly anticipate competing in Albury, NSW and are proudly going to represent Samoa in the Harmony Cup for Rugby League, showcasing our heritage battling against other nations.

Rugby is more than a sport to us—it’s a passion that binds us in our commitment to faith, family, and education. We aim to inspire others with our journey, emphasising that dedication and perseverance lead to achievement. Upholding the values of GNLC, we encourage fellow students to pursue their passions and strive for excellence in all endeavours, including rugby.

Our parents’ unwavering support has been crucial in navigating this journey, and we are grateful for their dedication. Through their guidance and God’s grace, they have made these opportunities possible. At the end of the day, Glory 2 God always!
