Loving Service in Action

This term students in the Primary Years have two opportunities to share unconditional love through actions to groups of people who may never know who they are.

For Christians, the expression of love is always a response to God’s love. It is a way of being that leads to inner peace. Love flows from the heart and manifests itself in caring, kind and respectful thoughts, words and actions. This is at the heart of John 3:16 a well-known Bible verse.

Through the College’s affiliation with Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS) many Primary Years students will be completing a colourful picture which will be taken to the Kakuma and Dadaab refugee camps and shared with the children whose schooling supported by ALWS through the Lutheran World Federation (LWF). Teachers are also able to send a word of encouragement to their colleagues in Kenya, letting them know that they are in our thoughts. During Book Week all our students have the opportunity to dress up as a book character and enjoy a variety of activities focused on literacy and literature. Over this term the Chapel offerings and the gold coin donations for the dress up day will be collected to support the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. The ILF is a national charity working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander remote Communities across Australia. They are Community-led, responding to requests from remote Communities for culturally relevant books, including early learning board books, resources, and programs to support Communities to create and publish their stories in languages of their choice. $300 buys packs of 40 books and $500 helps translate stories into First Language.

Through these opportunities our Good News students and families can provide a beautiful act of service that will make another child’s day, knowing that they will not receive anything directly back.

I look forward to sharing with you some of the pictures and messages sent through ALWS.

Premiers' Reading Challenge

The PRC is a statewide challenge that encourages students to develop a love of reading for leisure and pleasure. The Premiers' Reading Challenge also motivates our students to experience quality literature and read more widely.

Children in Prep-Year 2 are encouraged to read or 'experience' 30 books (20+ challenge, 10 choices) with their parents and teachers. Children from Year Three to Year Six are challenged to read 15 books, (10 + challenge, 5 choice).

Please click here for a full list of challenge books.

The PRC ends on the 6 September 2024. All students who complete the challenge and have their reading verified by the school’s PRC coordinator will receive a certificate signed by the current and former Premiers of Victoria.

A huge congratulations to all the students who have already met the challenge!

For all students still working towards meeting the challenge, please remember to add all the books you have read to your personal online dashboard using the username and password provided by your teacher by 4 September.
