CBCA Book of the Year Awards

The CBCA Book of the year awards is an annual event where the CBCA (Children's Book Council of Australia) recognises Australian books of literary merit and artistic quality.

This term all children have been exploring the CBCA shortlisted picture and non-fiction (Eve Pownall) books during their library time.  The CBCA judges announced the official Book of the Year winners last week, but every year Holy Saviour run their own voting.  This week all children voted for their favourites. Here are the results of our voting...

In both categories there were 2 very clear winners!

In the picture book category, 'Every night at Midnight'  written by Peter Cheong was the winner at Holy Saviour!  This book tells a lovely story about a little boy that turns into a wolf every night at midnight and his journey to find friendship in unexpected places.

The official CBCA winner in this category was 'Timeless' by  Kelly Canby. This is a beautiful story all about time - making it, losing it, catching it, waiting for it and everything in between!

In the Eve Pownell / Non Fiction category, 'Eww Gross: Foul Facts and Putrid Pictures'by Dan Marshall was the overwhelming Holy Saviour favourite. This book is a reference book about discovering just how gross and disgusting our universe really is!  Its filled with the world's filthiest facts and most putrid pictures.

The official CBCA winner was 'Country Town' by Isolde Martyn & Robyn Ridgeway. This is a lovely book detailing the happy times, sad times, boom times and gloom times of a small country town. From the First Peoples’ camp at the river crossing in the 1820s through to Carols by Candlelight at the showground in today’s world. It is a decade by decade wonderfully illustrated story of a small country community.

The voting boards, CBCA books and the official CBCA winning titles are currently on display in the library so please come in and explore these beautiful books.

YABBA Children's Choice Book Awards

From next week the children will be exploring and voting on their favourite YABBA picture books. YABBA (Young Australians Best Book Awards) encourages children to read recently published Australian books and to recommend them to their peers.  As the YABBA books are usually based on popularity, they are generally known to children.  These are the 8 YABBA shortlisted picture books that children will now be exploring during their library time:
