From the Principal
Its been a busy few weeks at WGS, with lots of great community events and some real world learning for our students. As we head towards the end of this term, we are starting to turn our thoughts to Sports Day, as well as the big events in term 4, including graduations, class placements and end of year excursions.
Year 6 Camp
Year 6 students went to Arbury Park to learn about the natural world, teamwork, and to develop the skills that are hard to show in a classroom. We saw so many great examples of resilience and leadership amongst this group, and a lot of students came home understanding that developing their skills is just as important as developing their knowledge.
Book Week
We held our Book Week parade when the year 6's returned, after a week of author visits, class activities and lunchtime events in the Resource Centre. We held a huge parade in week 6 to celebrate the books we love with some amazing costumes.
Kitchen Garden and Sensory Garden Projects – Two exciting projects are underway and will be finalised by the start of 2025. The Kitchen Garden Redevelopment work begins this holiday break, redesigning the Kitchen Garden space to increase its size and add some new features. Work is anticipated to be complete by late week 2 of Term 4. Our Sensory Garden planning is also well underway. All being well this work will start in the summer holidays and be completed by week 0 in 2025, providing a secure sensory space attached to our Special Classes in Purple Building.
Real World Learning
Finally, it's worth noting that learning works best when it has a practical, real world element. In the last few weeks there have been some great examples of learning that takes place beyond our school, and we are very pleased to see how WGS students are taking what they have learned and sharing it with the wider community.
Young ICT Explorers
We were pleased to see some of our senior students taking part in the Young IT Explorers program last week, sharing their coding and designs for a self-watering plant pot, utilising a Micro bits device, to fire a water pump whenever the soil in the plant pot gets too dry. The teams explained their design and their thinking to judges via a zoom link, and we are eagerly awaiting their feedback.
Royal Adelaide Show
Our senior students have entered these mouthwatering treats into the Royal Adelaide Show Cookery Competition. Amongst these treats were scones, cupcakes and our 1st Prize winning Kitchen Garden Sausage Rolls!
This year 19 students from years 1-6 were also entered into the Junior Art section of the Royal Adelaide Show. Unusually, everyone's work was displayed! (The Show do not always display every art work due to space, so well done to our students.) Special mentions go to the following students who received a merit certificate for their art work. Angela, 807, Mikayla, 707, Jessie 808, Sidhu 813 and Skye 1013.
These extra curricular events are a big part of school life, and we want to thank all the staff and families who supported the students to take part in this very busy term. We look forward to Sports day, graduation and more in Term 4.
