Middle School

Grades 3 and 4

Numeracy

In Grades 3 and 4, students are diving deep into the world of multiplication and division, developing crucial skills that will serve as building blocks for their mathematical understanding. Grade 3 students focus on recalling multiplication facts of two, three, five, and ten, along with their related division facts. They are also learning to represent and solve problems using various mental and written strategies and appropriate digital technologies. As they progress to Grade 4, students expand their recall of multiplication facts up to 10 × 10 and related division facts. They are also developing more efficient strategies for solving multiplication and division problems, especially those without remainders. Additionally, students explore and describe number patterns that arise from multiplication, further enhancing their understanding of how numbers work together. These foundational skills are essential for students as they build confidence in their mathematical abilities.

Poetry

The Grade 3/4 students have been writing poetry. Last week they wrote Limericks. When writing a Limerick, the first second and fifth line must rhyme and then third and fourth line rhyme. The students then listened to and are having a go at writng poetry in the form of Ballads - these are poems like Waltzing Matilda and the theme song from Gilligans Island where they tell a story in small 4 line stanzas (verses) and can be put to song.

Here are some Limmericks

Dolly

There once was a girl named Chloe - By Chloe

Who had a very cute dolly

She had some fancy shoes

That she tried not to lose

Poor Chloe's dolly ate all her lollies.

The Fast Dog from Switzerland - By Ashton

There was a fast dog named Buddy

That was always muddy

He was fast

But he had a cast

So his owner made him all suddy.

Limerick - by Atanaz

Atanaz held a bunny

But when she held bunny she got a sore tummy

She ran in the house

And started making up words like plouse

So she played with slime but the slime was too runny

Ballads

Dino’s with pizza on the moon By Luka

There was a plant called Stu 🪴

Who had a friend called Kew

He nicknamed him Tim

When he fell in a bin

They then flew to the moon 🌕

In a Banana Foon 🍌 🚀

They almost forget

To start up their jet!

They land,

Walk around and find a band, 🎶

And danced ‘till they dropped

A volcano they were sitting by suddenly popped!

They nearly died 😵

Until they get pied 🥧

By 3 dino’s

Called Pickle, Derp and Burp eating a cino

They went to the park

And stayed until it was dark

They had a feast

With a beast

Jack who hate’s meat    By Maximus

                  Jack hate’s meat

He thinks it is not complete

He hated meat so he broke a gate

And accidentally stepped on someone's mate

                   Jack likes puns

             And loves bread buns

                And loves to cheats

                 And hated defeat

            Jacks mum was mad

She said you have been bad

                  Jack got sad

         And was not very glad

             Jack loved 10

He wanted to see Big Ben

            And he had lice

But he wanted to be nice
