Grade 1 and 2

Multiplication and Division

Farmer Joe came to ACPS and asked the Grade 1 and 2 students to help plant a garden of wonderful things to grow. We used our knowledge of arrays and multiplication facts to create a garden for our farms. There were small plots that were 2x2 and bigger plots of 6x5. We have been learning lots of new and exciting maths concepts and strategies to solve multiplication and division problems. Some other strategies include skip counting, arrays, groups of, sharing and many more. We love using concrete materials to help us problem solve and have loved seeing and feeling those 'Uh Huh!' (lightbulb) moments especially seeing the connection between multiplication and division.

Sleepover

We are busy preparing for our Foundation to Grade 2 Afternoon Tea/Sleepover next week. In Grade 2 we are talking a lot about two words:

PERSEVERANCE and RESILIENCE

PERSEVERANCE - just when we think something is hard, like the upcoming sleepover (sleeping overnight) we try our best to rethink our way of thinking and say I CAN DO IT! We take a few deep breathes and push through the challenges and we then show RESILIENCE - once we continue to push through our challenge we wake up feeling proud and successful. We then celebrate our achievements with our family and friends. Bring on the sleepover...more fun to be had!

School Holiday Reading Activities

Holidays are fast approaching!!

It’s important for children to continue reading over the term school holidays to maintain their literacy skills. When children read, they learn new words, they get ideas for new stories, and they are practicing the very skill that they need to learn. Podcasts are a different way that children can consume content without having to read printed material. This podcast encourages children to write their own stories!

More tips to make holiday reading fun!

Continue with a daily reading routine with short sessions.

Spend some time with your child revising their letters, sounding out difficult words, chunking the text, making predictions and inferring meaning from the writing. Discussing how the illustrations relate to the text also helps children understand what they are reading.

Engage young children by giving them the agency to choose books for themselves. Take them to the library or a bookshop and let them find the books that interest them.

Find stories that relate to your child’s interests or, if you’re travelling somewhere, find stories about the destination or activities you’ll be doing.

One of the very best things that parents can do is to show their kids how much pleasure they get from reading.

So, remember to grab yourself a book, for the holidays!

School Holiday Writing Activities

There are plenty of ways you can engage your child in writing during the term break!

Make some holiday Postcards; we’re going old-school with postcards for family or friends.

holiday journal is a good way to help children focus on what is happening around them and learn how to put their observations into writing. It’s a memory keeper of a moment in your child’s life, through their own eyes. They could use it to record highlights from their school holidays or as a day-to-day update on a special holiday away. Decorate your journal with photos, stickers and illustrations!

Encourage them to write by playing with words. A fun tradition is to design word searches or playing hangman. Try a treasure hunt where your child draws a treasure map and writes a series of hints or clues for you or family members to find hidden items.

Holidays are a brilliant time to improve your child’s writing by making lists. Whether it’s a list of things they’d like to do over the holidays. A list of things to pack for a holiday, or daily to-do lists. You could even set a “theme” for the day, such as animals in my environment, and get them to write a list of every animal they see that day.
