Middle Learning News

Hello families,
Literacy
This week, students have been focusing on enhancing their reading fluency. We’ve been using the ‘scooping’ technique to help them read more smoothly. Additionally, they’ve been practising to self-monitor. This involves stopping for any parts do not make sense and stopping to reread as needed. We’ve seen some impressive improvements in our reading skills, so keep up the great work, everyone!
As a gentle reminder, we encourage you to spend just five minutes reading with your child each night. It’s a wonderful way to support their progress.
Writing:
Last week, we established our official class Editing Process. Students brainstormed key skills they felt were crucial for improving their work. Their suggestions were summarised into the following four steps:
- Read aloud: Listen to your work to ensure it makes sense.
- Check Capitalisation: Ensure that capital letters are used only at the beginning of sentences and for proper names.
- End Punctuation: verify that full stops, exclamation marks and question marks are used correctly.
- Correct spelling: Look for misspelt words and work with a teacher to find the correct spelling.
We’re working to incorporate these skills into our writing process, aiming to make them a natural and integral part of our writing routine.
Mathematics
As part of our mathematics sessions, we continue to explore multiplication and division. We have been using real-life examples to deepen our understanding of both concepts and their connections. Students have also used concrete materials to aid their learning. We continue to practise skip counting and some students are working on reciting their multiplication facts.
Book Week
Our Book Week activities have been such a joy. Students have spent some time reading their favourite books, analysing illustrations and giving their thoughts in the form of a book review. We met everyday as a school to hear our leaders read to us and participate in various activities. It was beautiful welcoming so many parents on Wednesday. A big thank you to Shan for organising all of this and to our senior students who led us with such great attitudes. Thank you!
This week we were absolutely blown away by Luke’s impressive Lego skills. We were very lucky to have his 9000 piece Lego Titanic visit our classroom along with some other creations of his. Thanks Luke!
We enjoyed Lambert’s visit last week.
Have a beautiful long weekend everyone!
