Reading is Magic!
Book Week 2024 has come to a close, and what a magical week it was! From imaginative costumes to inspiring author talks and engaging activities, our celebration of literature truly lived up to its theme: "Reading is Magic."
Costume Parade Extravaganza
The week kicked off with a spectacular Book Parade in the auditorium. Our Year 7 and Year 8 students dazzled everyone with their creative costumes. A special shoutout goes to Dior Speights and Mikayla Ismail from Year 7 for their whimsical Willy Wonka costumes, which captured the essence of Roald Dahl's beloved character. Vera Wood from Year 8 wowed the crowd with her extraordinary Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde ensemble, and Grace Davis’ colorful Rainbow Fish costume was a vibrant splash of creativity. Best group costumes were awarded to Soleil Egan, Maya Nelson and Lexis King for their Alice in Wonderland themed costumes. Chloe Macasero and Rose Nguyen of Year 8 brought Jack and the Beanstalk to real life as did Jasmine Lyton, Aahana Arun, Abigail Cresp and Sianna Carter as the wonderful characters of the Three Little Pigs fairy tale. The parade was a wonderful showcase of our students' imagination and enthusiasm for reading.
Author Events That Captivated
Our Book Week featured two exceptional authors who captivated students with their insights and stories. Gabriel Bergmoser, renowned for his Boone Shepherd trilogy, visited Year 7 and Year 8 students, engaging them with tales of adventure and writing tips. Ellie Marney, acclaimed for her crime thrillers Every Breath and The Killing Code, visited our Year 9 and 10 students providing an intriguing look into the world of crime fiction. Both author events were highlights, inspiring many students to dive deeper into the world of writing and storytelling.
A Week Full of Fun Activities
The Resource Centre was a hub of activity throughout Book Week.
On Monday, teachers shared their favorite childhood books during lunchtime, reminiscing about the stories that shaped their early reading experiences. Ms Zalac impressed everyone with her reading of Spot in French.
On Tuesday, students eagerly participated in the Big Book Week Quiz which challenged their knowledge of books and authors. Well done to Mrs Illichman, Katie Tran and Michelle Gonsalves for their outstanding win.
Max, the Magician visited on Wednesday and brought a touch of wonder with his magic show, leaving students spellbound during lunchtime. Maya Nelson of Year 7 commented, “I loved the telepathic trick he did. He started the trick off by getting out two helmets and putting them on two students' heads. He gave them each a card but didn’t let anyone see it but them. Then Ms Mary wore another helmet and had to mind read and guess the card. She got them both right! I really loved the magic show, and I hope Max can come again soon.”
Thursday featured a creative badge-making session, where students crafted their own book-themed badges to showcase their love for reading. And to close out the week Mr Milana and the senior students brought the excitement of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, a quiz that tested students' literary knowledge and quick thinking.
Homeroom trivia kept the excitement going with daily questions that spurred friendly competition and sparked conversations about literature. Congratulations to Ms Justice and 7 Tullow and Ms Milani and 9/10 Ruth for winning the trivia competition.
Manga Drawing Competition
The Manga Drawing Competition, which started at the beginning of Book Week, is a fantastic opportunity for students to showcase their artistic talents. With entries reflecting a diverse range of styles and stories, it is clear that our students are not only passionate readers but also talented creators.
