Teaching and Learning
Mrs Peta Phillips - Assistant Principal
As we approach the end of term, it’s hard to believe just how much we have experienced together—what an eventful and rewarding few months it has been.
At Karoo Primary School we place great importance on taking time to pause and reflect. Reflection is defined as “thinking carefully about possibilities and opinions”, and it is a practice that sits at the heart of our work as educators.
Our staff regularly engage in reflective practice, thoughtfully reviewing their teaching and learning experiences to celebrate successes and identify opportunities for growth. This ongoing process supports high-quality teaching and ultimately enhances outcomes for all students.
We also recognise the importance of fostering this same skill in our students. By providing opportunities for them to reflect on their learning, we help build their confidence, independence, and ability to understand their own progress.
In the coming section, I’d like to share why reflective practice is such a valued part of learning at Karoo Primary School.
At Karoo Primary School, we encourage our students to take time to think about their learning—what they did well, what they found challenging, and what they might do differently next time. This is called reflective practice, and it plays an important role in helping students grow as confident, independent learners.
Reflective practice is simply about students pausing to think about their learning experiences.
Sometimes this happens during learning, when students make changes or try a different approach as they work. Other times, it happens after an activity, when they look back and think about what they learned—whether it’s a classroom task, a project, or an excursion.
Students might also reflect before starting something new by thinking about what they already know. These moments help them make better connections and feel more prepared.
For students, reflection helps them to:
For teachers, it helps us to:
At Karoo Primary School, teachers guide students by showing them how to reflect and giving them simple structures to follow. This helps all students feel confident to share their thinking, even if they are just beginning.
I would now like to invite you to hear from some of our wonderful students on their reflection of Term 1, 2026. Enjoy!
