PREP

This week, the Prep students have begun painting their self portraits. We learnt about ways we can use colour to enhance our work. Students were also taught different brush techniques and different types of brushes we can use to achieve different things.

Their work is colourful, joyful and striking. 

GRADE 1/2

This week, students have been experimenting with foam printing. They have designed a plant that has never been seen before (just as Anna Atkins photographed algae that had never been seen by many). They drew their designs onto foam and printed them using blue ink. The children loved this process as it was very exciting for them to peel back the paper to reveal their monoprints.

Some classes will complete these next week due to the public holiday and pupil free day.

GRADE 3/4

We are designing clay houses for our miniature characters. The houses can be as traditional or as abstract as students wish, after all Spongebob lives in a pineapple under the sea... why can't we? Children have worked on making houses from slabs of clay, as well as hand-building different unique shapes such as penguin houses or toadstools.

Clay offers students a new way of thinking about art. Many students have worked minimally with clay and there is a lot to learn. Problem solving is key here, how can I get the idea from my head and turn it into something using a lump of clay? It is always so inspiring watching children work with this particular medium.

GRADE 5/6

This week, students worked on gel plate printing. This medium is fun and exciting as you never know what you will see when you pull the paper from the plate. There are always a lot of happy children when they see their idea worked. Next week we will start using these to collage over photographs of our school.

Some People...

At the start of the year, we were learning about the Art of Diversity and the work of Reginald Laurent. His work celebrates difference and the beauty of the human race because of our diversity. To compliment this, we committed a wall in our art room to celebrating all people and their differences. Children were encoruaged to write someting about themselves or a person they know at the school to add to the wall. These little post it notes have been bringing many smiles to many faces. Since going up, we have seen a number of children lingering around this wall, reading the notes. We have even witnessed them running back to their friends yelling, "some one is going through *this*, just like me"
